Police pursuits

.. but what leads them into a fast chase in the first place? the fact they have there sirens going? What is really that urgent that warrants a chase? Surely a more "stealthier" approach is more effective and safer?

What sort of stealthy approach would you recommend in one of these?

If the vehicle fails to stop, it's an indication that there's something not right with the occupant(s) so it's obviously in the police's best interests to find out, be it a revoked licence, no insurance, drugs, burglary offences, whatever. You can't just let people go every time they floor it away from the police with the hope that maybe they'll catch up with them again another day.

Also not sure why you're quick to blame police for the collision when it's entirely possible that the other vehicle involved didn't react correctly.

I think they do back off when there is a helicopter available and sometimes simply when it isn't deemed to be safe. I'd assume that in future drones will be much more readily available and more cost effective than helicopters and high speed pursuits can become less common.

You raise a good point.. It would be nuts to chase a suspect because he's stolen a few mobile phones.. Someone must have to make that call.

What if they're an armed robber? If you've been injured and are shaken up from someone pulling a knife on you wouldn't you want Police to catch them? In many situations if Police don't pursue, they won't get caught.

What if that robber than kills someone because they weren't caught?

Damned if we do, damned if we don't.

Came in expecting a thread about the hobbies of Police persons.

No idea why. :p

@ the .50 cal argument - lollage.

Better make sure they dont miss. A stray .50 cal round is going to seriously damage whatever it hits. Perhaps even worse if it is a ricochet.

But I would be interested to see the evidence that this approach works on civillian vehicles, and see the data on the consequences of missing or ricochets.

Seems to me that if it is such an easy answer, why is this technique not being used all over the world? My guess is that there is a reason it is not, though :)

CCTV? the real world isnt like CSI/NCIS where they can tap/hack into every CCTV system and get full HD video and/or upscale crud quality video to pixel perfection.

There was a guy locally to me who had a record and didn't stop when police attempted to pull him over, I think they were looking out for him linked to drugs offences. In the resulting pursuit, he lost control, left the road (almost straight road) and did x mph into a tree. The tree won and he dies in the accident. Next week, family and friends blaming the police for his death because they chased him. It seemed to not register with them that if he'd stopped, or even learned how to drive properly, he'd probably still be alive.

Speed becomes irrelevant when matched. Don't need to be several hundred metres away. Target isn't small in terms of target sizes that marksmen are trained to shoot. Erratic movement becomes less likely as they're not being chased by police cars.
Boom. (not headshot)

Lets play "spot the guy who's never fired a gun before and is basing his experience on hollywood action films" :p

Oh look. I win.

The god damn police helicopter makes enough noise at 3AM without someone dangling out the side firing an AS50.

Though watching him try not to launch himself out of the helicopter when the recoil hits would be a good laugh. We also have enough potholes in the roads without stray .50 cal rounds ruining the place.

Quite why anyone would think firing a .50BMG rifle at a moving vehicle on public roads from a helicopter is in any way safer than using a stinger is beyond me anyway. Standard GD I guess. Not exactly an ideal way of retrieving a stolen vehicle either.

"We got your A6 back sir...sorry about the holes. And the blood. So much blood."

I know right. Clearly Hellfire missiles would be the sensible option.

I'd love to see the guys face when he gets a bill for the round they used to stop his car, and a £60 fine for littering.
