Imagine if Valve suddenly released Half Life 3... but to make a point they allowed it to launch without exclusivity on any platform that wanted it including Epic's, and see how many people choose to play it where (i.e. actual competition)...

people would just get it on steam... of course they would because it is the established platform which is already rooted into many peoples minds as the 1 true store front.

but exactly the same was true 15 years ago as well when HL2 1st launched IF people had the option to NOT be locked to any 3rd party platform and just play directly using a key, or be locked to steam, then the vast majority would have shunned steam.

1 thing i think that needs to be confirmed - if it isnt already - if i buy the game today on epic (i aint, but just for discussion) and you buy the game in 6 months time on steam....
This is the key point that really needs clarification. They very well know that if both versions aren't inter-compatible then folks including yours truly won't touch the Epic version and instead will hold out for 6 months.

I was there around that time too... though the biggest uproar I recall was a few years later when they retro-fitted Steamworks into (ironically enough) Unreal Tournament 3, so suddenly a game you'd installed with no DRM or launcher related to it needed to be moved over to Steam. People were extremely reluctant to do so and questioned what the point was, why they were messing with the game which was working perfectly fine etc. and were as defensive about it as people are being now... But the crucial difference was that they didn't force people to move to Steam in that case - they promoted the benefits of having auto patching, achievements etc. and tried to convince people to move over but ultimately if you didn't want to switch then you didn't have to...

I still miss the days of going to a computer fair, picking up boxed games with discs and a huge manual, no internet required...well it didn't exist back then, so no surprise there.

Simpler, happier days.

Steam for me. Exclusives might be Epics way into the market against the bohemoth that is Steam, but they're bad for the consumer.

They can't compete with a high quality platform or prices, so instead they freeze out the competition. They can go sweivel if they think I'm gunna support that.

Same as! I miss the manuals, I still have the manuals for Half-life and a few other games. You could read the manual on the way home to prime you before playing the game :)

I don't believe for a moment that Half Life 3 will ever see the light of day.

can we still play together?. if we can then store front decisions really dont matter, but if we cant that is a major ballache and as such it would be better keeping it a permanent epic store exclusive imo.

I’m expecting Borderlands 3 to work the same as Fortnite does. Load the game on Steam and it will prompt you to log in with an Epic account. Then you’ll have a separate list of friends for cross-platform multiplayer. I think Steamworks integration will be kept to a bare minimum.

indeed this would make sense but it desperately need confirming either way because like i said, other games have totally walled off multiplayer. (anything which is steamworks afaik)

Certainly needs to be something that's cleared up. Luckily its not something that will affect me as all of my friends will be getting it on Epic anyway but nevertheless its something they need to clarify.

I really enjoyed it when it was released but that was half a year ago and I've played it to death and have been finished with it for a while now. Will be interesting to see how well it sells on Steam
