Come on man it's only £10 more than the 4790K cost at launch and that has even less PCI Lanes, tbh it seems like you're really having to stretch to find a reason to dislike the 5820K
For people buying now, and looking in that Z97 + 4790K price range, buying into X99 (Similar priced mobo) and 5820K (Similar priced CPU) makes sense, 50% more cores, more cache, DDR4 support etc. It's all good, I mean you can say DDR4 is more expensive sure, but I would prefer to buy into a new standard now than throw money into DDR3 which right no is also quite pricey.
Each to their own and all that, I just think 5820K is seriously good value for what you're getting.
+1
Totally agree if you're happy with what you've got no reason to switch over, but if you're building now. 5820K + X99 makes a whole lot of sense.
I like to have the latest stuff, so would have bought anyway. The epic price of the 5820K + UD4 mobo is just a bonus for me![]()
Remember how much flack the Core i7 3820 got when it was released to be "mainstream" to the X79 platform (even cheaper than the 5820K now), and eventhough it had 40 PCI lanes for 16x16x8 it was shredded to pieces in reviews because it was not unlocked and the 2700K/3770K still could match it performance wise. Many reviewers said it was a CPU that should not have been released.
I agree the 5820K is good value but if the old 3820 which released at ~£235 could show 40 PCI lanes, then I see no reason as why the 5820K should not also sport 40 lanes - unless Intel intentionlly gimped it to 28 lanes so it's still less attractive than say 5930K and won't be too competitive against their mainstream Z97 platform.
As for the 4790K release price I can only say that in Denmark the 5820K is £40 more expensive than what the 4790K cost back then.... cheapest 5820K here is £309.
With all that said I do admit if I had the extra money to spend I'd love to get an Asus X99E-WS, 5930K, Crucial Value 16Gb 2133Mhz

same performance all over the line.
