Out of interest, how what will you be replacing your TR1 with? Are you going for 12 or 16 cores?
Probably 16 cores. I don't feel like downgrading from the 16 cores I already have and I'm sure upgrading to the newest gen will give me enough improvement in IPC, cache and memory management. It's just I can't get a massively overkill number of cores for a reasonable price like I did with Threadripper 1, and it seems I never will again. I believe the 32 core Threadripper should be at the sub 1k price-point to make it as viable as 1st gen for me and that's not even talking about the latest Threadripper motherboards, which are also too expensive.

My only worry with 4000 mainstream is that I may not get a top 3% bin chip, as I did with Threadripper 1.

Buy what you need now then upgrade down the line if it's worth it.

I know it's always better to wait if got can but I do need to buy a new mobo/CPU as my old one died the other week.

Have we seen any benchmarks to indicate what the performance jump over the 3000 series will be like?

I will ditch it, but in like 1-2 years time. Not on release. Will probably buy it as people ditch their 4000 ryzen for 5000 :p

I might do the same if my motherboard is compatible which likley won't be.

Therefore I'll likley wait for the 6000 or 7000 series before upgrading. Because ddr5 prices will be mental to begin with and will be 1/4 of the price within a few years.

I may also decide to go for 8/16 over my current 6/12 cores and threads if its necessary otherwise save money and stick with the 6/12.

Cpu power isn't really an issue any more. Gpu power is. If anything we have too much cpu power. I use like 25% whilst gaming at times.

Yea, same here mate. Although I keep saying I will go 12 core next, I may even just go 8 core. It really does all depend on price. If I can get it cheap enough second hand as people ditch them to go 5000 series then I will, if not then will go 8 core which will still be plenty for a long time by the looks of it.

I was thinking of even going 16 core when it goes cheap at some point, but I just don’t see the point as things are right now.

I'm on a placeholder 2600, i'll look at performance and jumpt to a 3700 if they come down a lot or maybe a 4700

3600 is the first cpu I have ever had (25-30 years worth) that I cannot see me outgrowing.I just can't think what I would need to do that it can't do. Obviously want and keeping up with the crowd is different.

I voted yes, simply because in 2-3 years time when Zen 3 prices are coming down, I'll be replacing my 3600 for whatever is the best gaming chip at the time +1 (i.e. one step above that) to ensure more longevity out of my system.

likely what i'll do in a couple of years also
gfx card will be next, but won't be giving nvidia 2k for a card

Yes - my 5.5y/o 5280k system was getting a little troublesome, so jumped on AM4 with an X570 Tomahawk.

New Vermeer was arriving this year - so although I wanted 8+ cores i opted for a £144 3600... with the intention of getting a Zen3 8c/16t or 12c/24t CPU asap.

And then i'll recycle the 3600 into a B550 itx media PC.

If I can get a 4900x in the CPU socket, and a USB 4.0 add-in card in the PCIe 4x slot, then I'll be very happy.

Maybe, just need to wait until launch first. I currently have the Ryzen 5 3600, so if there is a new CPU released that greatly benefits me for not a great deal of money then yes I will upgrade. But if there isn't any major reason to upgrade then I won't...

Not yet, only got my B450M and 3600 last month, happy to sit for now and pick up a cheaper 4000 series when the following gen is out, upgrade my BIOS and ride the Zen 3 wave.

I'll be looking to build a new machine based on a Ryzen 4000 once it finally arrives.
I've been on my 7700K (5ghz) for 3 years now, & whilst it's still a good performer for my needs, I have the upgrade itch.

Will be looking at it as a winter project, new case, redesign of the watercooling etc.

Almost certainly. I'll probably do a hand off of this system to my wife (Ryzen 3600), and get myself something nice in 4xxx. (My wife, my daughter and I will all have our own gaming PC's at that point lol).
