Pool Cue's

Ok proper n00b here.

is there a difference between pool cues and snooker cues?

Primarily it's the size of the tip. If you play normal UK 8-ball pool you can easily use the cue for snooker as well. Go for a 9.5mm tip, then find one the right weight for you, I use a very light cue (17.5oz).

If you're a member of Rileys, they should have a large selection of cues for HALF your budget for decent (ish) ones.

nope not a member of Riley's

this place has a doorway entrance then you walk up some stairs and go through a security door, and then behind the bar is an Emo Kid you show your member ship card and he knows we play pool, gives us the balls and then gives us our "usual" table and it's all good :)

about 7 tables all in all....maybe 8

These balls are the spots/stripes variety....does that make a difference?

I also prefer a very light cue, whereas my mate loves em when the back of it is very heavy

It depends on the size of cue ball really, but it sounds like a larger (American) style set up. In that case get a proper Pool cue, and I'd spend no more than £40 on one.

pool cue's what? ;)

I have a kind of "inbetween" cue, its got a 10mm tip and you can screw in a heavier butt for pool breaks.

American pool balls are significantly larger (and larger tables) than the UK Pub pool balls. you want a chunky cue for american pool

Easy.

Pot the reds then screw back for the yellow, green, brown, blue, pink and black.

a funny post from visage!
it made me laugh. the image of denis taylor singing etc is not a good one!

Theres a cue place at Southend called the Cue Doctor, it's got a decent selection of cue's in and a table or two to knock about on.

Got my one piece cue from their for £200 last year and it's doing me well, cues range from £30 to £250 ish.

What type of pool is it for? they don't have a brilliant range of 9ball cues but do a lot of snooker/8ball cues. Imho you want a tip about 8mm for 8ball (but a few people I know play with tips as low as 6.5mm!) and 9mm for snooker and then probibly 12/14 for 9ball.

http://www.parris-cues.co.uk/ if you want a realy nice cue, but they are not cheap.

I dont understand why you would need a different cue for 9 ball, isnt that just different rules rather than different balls / table?? Or am I missing something?

A proper 9-ball table (i.e not a UK table with 2 sets of balls(red/yellow & spot/stripe)) is much bigger and has huge balls. Like me.

I disagree that people will automatically get bored of pool. I find 9-ball much more interesting than snooker. It's much faster and tactically very challenging. Snooker is tactically very one-dimensional as fas as I am concerned.

Pool can be just as entertaining as snooker, been playing both at sunday league type level for a few years, it all depends what floats peoples boat. I've seen tactical games of pool last over an hour just like games of snooker, it's just a lot of people don't know the rules which makes it impossible to play a tactical game.

Pool is harder to pick up than snooker (imho) because of the diffrent rules that are played. Everyone knows what classes as a fowl in snooker, how to score points etc.

thanks for all the replys guys, me and me mate are going down rileys on saturday, might check out that cue guy in southend aswell

your talking about pool games lasting an hour? we only get that because we are crap :p

mind you, got 7 games in last week in 2 hours

I can understand that. Ive seen people with flashing lights in their cue, please dont get one of those.

Hand made in Phillipines, has two identical shafts. I also have a break cue. There was a time I played a lot of 9-ball for money but now I doubt I even play once a year. Ah, married life is bliss!
