Poor performance 7990

HI guys,

I've recently upgraded, heres my spec:

MSI HD 7990 6144MB GDDR5
Intel Core i7-3770 3.40GHz (Ivybridge) Socket LGA1155 Processor (77W)
Gigabyte Z77-G1-Sniper M3 Intel Z77 (Socket 1155) DDR3 Micro ATX
850w corsair PSU
6GB gskill ripjaw DDR3

I was forced to upgrade due to some accidental water damage on my previous pc (the mrs... dont ask!) and to be honest i've been quite disappointed with the 7990's performance. I thought after reading various benchmark reviews of how powerful the 7990 was it wouldn't break sweat running games such as rome TW 2 however the performance was pretty sub standard. I'm thinking it might be to do with the drivers? But having always used nvidia cards im a bit lost with regards to the optimising the catalyst settings and which drivers to use.

I'm currently using the 13.10 beta drivers however previously tried the 13.4. Is there something im missing?

Thanks

Check your GPU usage?

But for Total Wars type of games, I would think there's any CPU currently available that will not bottleneck a 7990...as it is hugely CPU demanding. Also with your CPU at stock it certainly doesn't help.

Is it just Rome 2 that you've tried? From what I can tell, that is running poorly on a lot of good systems.

Quite a few games are cpu bound. Wouldn't surprise me if TW 2 was one of them.

With such a powerful gpu you would probably benefit from an unlocked cpu. There will still be a good few games where the 3770 will not bottleneck the 7990 at all though, so its not a terrible match, but having an overclocked intel cpu will let it perform better in some instances.

ok thanks for the comments chaps, so I should overclock basically to boost performance?
I've got a corsair H80 cpu cooler, will that do the job for Overclocking? I'm going to try Bf3 and i've tried Natural selection 2 which to be fair runs nicely, but i would expect it to on a high end ish system.

Do you have the 3770 or 3770k? You can only overclock with the k version.

Rome 2 Total War like every other Total War game before it has no crossfire or sli support. It's pretty buggy and although CA claimed it require the same specs as Shogun 2 it's clearly been made to be more demanding at the highest settings. On the campaign map the engine can only use two cores. I would post in the Rome 2 total war thread and check with others who have a similar spec to see what there experience is like.

Shocking in this day and age.

Thanks freddie, had i have known that i probably would have gone with a larger single core card titan or something similar, its so annoying to see only 30 fps on rome 2 TW.

Will overclockers exchange my 3770 for a k? I know they're very good with RMA's for faulty products but does anyone have experience with exchanging for other products?

I think its a game issue. However you should be seeing full usage on one gpu and a little on the other. It won't get any better than that till the game gets patched. Make sure you're not playing in windowed mode either.

A Titan is ideal for running RTW2

As stated above the game is very poor at multi GPU support and at 1600p maxed out a real vram hog. I have used 3.2gb of vram in one of the historical battles (Raphia) and one of the other guys on these forums have got up to 3.5gb of vram in the prolog.

I think one of the reasons it may seem slow on the campaign map is there are now a lot more individual factions which gives the CPU more work to do.
