Porsche Owners Thread - If you own one or just like or hate them! :)

Might be worth moving your LOI to a Cayman GT4 RS ;)

I think the RS cars maybe a little too hardcore for me. However, never say never.

On a separate note, on the way and back from Silverstone yesterday the GTS managed a rather impressive 35 MPG and ACC is put simply epic!

Did you try a car with and without PDCC? If so what did you think?

I believe the car I had for the afternoon was a non PDCC car, other than the ride going from a soft to a hard ride with PASM but on smooth surface the differences are negotiable, in a straight line when you are doing anything extreme.

I may look into getting one on loan for a weekend later and then write something a bit more competent.

Afternoon!

I had the pleasure of driving a Porsche today for the first time. It was a 15 plate Boxster with Sport Chrono and several of the gadget options and the manual gearbox. I've read on here and over on other boards about how the Boxster 981 is a fun car to drive, even though it doesn't have masses of power. It has been a superb sunny Sunday, and I had a few hours to kill...

The gearbox is sweet and positioned perfectly, nice short throws and a little notchy in selection. pedals are nicely spaced, there's more gap between throttle and brake. Considering you're surrounded by body panels, the mirrors offer considerably good visibility of the important areas around the car.

The exhaust sounds better from the outside than it does from the inside. I didn't think much of it. The S comes with sports exhaust though I believe.

It handled great, took it on all manner of roads and motorway and got a really good feel for how the chassis handles. The steering didn't offer as much feedback from the road surface as the E46 does though and it's a bit heavier too.

I found the power to be adequate for this car but I found it felt lacking, even all the way to red line. There's a slip ramp that joins a motorway here and flooring it in 2nd through this, the power was very smooth but I kept thinking "I'm not feeling like I'm going fast" and the noise from the exhaust wasn't my bag.

I also thought the brakes on the E46 M3 were stronger, I had to mash the pedal in the Boxster to get the same kind of stopping strength.

Loved the rev matching in Sport Plus though, and the handling was wicked :D

Questionable quality of some plastics inside however, the indicator stalks felt like they might snap if I pressed them with any force, the passenger seatbelt kept banging against the cabin wall and the climate control buttons are among the worst I have ever seen...

On the brakes that is a Porsche thing, they remove servo and add feel, I assure the brakes are better you just need to get used to their feel, which is better. First time I drove the GT3 I came to stop and nearly didn't, you have to tune into them. Also I would question the steering feel though to be fair the 981 has the electric system and it isn't as good in most forms. The previous model which I drove quite a bit was much better. M3 steering was never that special so it's a shame if you felt this was stronger on the M3 as that suggests Porsche have broken the Boxster. GTS was OK I thought, but not as good as Pork of old.

This.

I've never known how to explain it before but when swapping between my Boxster and my OHs car I was always aware of how different braking felt.

The brakes on my Boxster (once I'd got use to them) were amazing and easily the best I've had.

So the thing is then, I need to drive an older model to see where things changed with them!

The steering definitely was fast, turn speed vs wheel movement was on the ball, I had to work it less than I do with the M3, for example, but the feedback from the front tyres to the steering wheel of what the front end is doing wasn't quite there, or at least what I'm used to. If the Boxster has an all electric steering set-up then that would make sense.

In weeks like this (with great weather) I do really really miss my 987 Boxster S. It was such a capable car and the level of confidence I had with the grip and braking was crazy.

The PSE on the S is a optional extra, its only standard on the GTS and then has a tweaked version of it.

Also looking at the collection of buttons where the PSE would be, it seems to blank.

You'll often find with Porsche, that the power delivery is very linear and you are often going quicker than what you think.

I also thought the brakes on the E46 M3 were stronger, I had to mash the pedal in the Boxster to get the same kind of stopping strength.

Porsche state that any of their cars should be able to stop in half the time it take them to get them to 60. I'm pretty sure that the brakes are more powerful than that from the E46. However, the PCCBs take it to anther level.

Oh it was definitely going slower than I would have thought! 2nd gear bounces off the limiter at 79MPH on the digital speedo yet it didn't feel like that speed at all. I think the S is what I'd enjoy the most. In the M3 the noise and feel and acceleration to redline was just far greater. In recreational road cars such as these I think that is a pretty important factor, at least for the way I like to enjoy a spirited drive anyway :p

Wow, that was ages ago  I've not been paying attention!

Just realised you drove a non S model. I've driven like for like S and non S (987 model) and it makes a world of difference.

The non S model is fine, but the S is 10x better.

Yup, figured since every piece of text I've read praises the handling and states that the lower power doesn't matter too much given how fun it is to drive, that I'd give it a go. I agree of course, just I like more power now.
