Porsche Owners Thread - If you own one or just like or hate them! :)

Same for me... as you know after the Palmersport day...

For me...

996 (any model) < E46 / E92 M3 < 997

In the same price band... the E46 and E92 M3 are both better cars than the 996.

Push the price bracket a bit and the 997 comes to life.

I'd buy an M3 over a 996 any day... even if the 996 was half the price.

Tomorrow I'm test driving a 997.2 GT3 for the extended weekend and then I get a 997.2 turbo (non-s) for a week. Looking forward to the upgrade... not sure yet which I'll prefer.

Even a turbo or gt3?

I really loved your yellow C2S! When you say C2 or C4, would you steer clear of the S variants due to increased bore scoring troubles? In all honestly I think I'd be pretty happy with the 320bhp offered by the normal one.

I take your opinion very seriously with the driving characteristics as you've had a lot of experience with these. I have only driven a turbo 997 with a tiptronic box which, whilst really stupidly fast, took all the joy out of it. The big difference between both of us is that I'm after a hairdresser's car which it could be argued takes a load of the driving dynamics away from any car compared to the hard roofed variant.

Regards bore scoring and IMS, forget IMS it is so rare and a 2006 built 997 has an uprated IMS which are less likely to fail.

Bore scoring effects them all, it is believed the 3.8 suffers more than the 3.6 but if there is truth to it I do not know, technical and from an engineering point of view I understand why the 3.8 is supposed to suffer more.

Driving wise its actually hard to be a boggo 997.1 C2 on 18" wheels with stock none PASM suspension, they are to put it so natural. Lower grip limit, more progressive and you have to work it harder, a real fun car.

I'd be on the lookout for a 997 that was a 2006 build, which is generally most 55 plate onwards with as few as miles as possible with full service history and then slap an OPC warranty on it for peace of mine.

Also do not dismiss a Cayman, can you get one of those within budget with the newer DFI engine for reliability?

Thanks I'd just not buy a 996, I think they look meh on the outside, but admittedly the 996 Turbo and C4S are somewhat an exception, but I'd still take a boggo 997 over them, they just look a lot more modern but I have always hated the 996 front-end with a passion.

A healthy C2 or C4 997 with 320BHP go well, very well if you know how to drive, they are one of those cars when piloted well are really quick but I found most people who own 911's in particular simply cannot drive them, they find them to intimidating or just understeer everywhere.

I drove 997 turbo twice with tiptronic, hugely quick, absolutely the most boring 500BHP I ever drove, dull dull and more dull. The tiptronic Porsche used before PDK was just simply woeful in a performance car. To cruise and 0-60 runs it was OK but to attack a country road or just enjoy the car the gear box was bloody disgraceful, it gets even worse in the 996 models. Manual is an absolute MUST on the older P cars. Now PDK major leap on but any Porsche with PDK is well over 30k !

Are you saying you want a hair dressers car? Bit confused! If so just buy the best Boxster you can find, maybe the budget could be pushed to a 981 Boxster, totally amazing things to drive!

By that I mean that I want a convertible 911. I appreciate how good the Boxster is meant to be, but I think with my current car I have a seriously good 2 seater roadster and a Boxster would for me represent a bit of a sidestep at my budget. I want a 911, but don't want to lose top down driving fun. This for me rules out the Cayman also.

EDIT: I'm looking at 997's now, there is a huge choice, but at a higher budget. The advice of a post 2006 model is a good one with regards to IMS. I'm not so worried about that as I think it is rare and it can be sorted.

996... turbo = no interest.

Haven't tried a 996 GT3, so not sure. Given the characteristics of other 996... I think I would prefer a BMW.

Jump up to the 997 and Porsche overtake BMW noticeably.

Hence my choice of purchase progression... I had enough money for a 996 911... but chose a PDK 987.2 because it's a much much better car + I wanted to try mid-engined for a change from my normal driving type.

A 987.2 PDK will kick the ass of most 996 variants on a track without breaking a sweat.

If I had the money for a 997.2 at the time... I would have got that now... but that's why I'm looking at that era turbo/gt3 now... I didn't want to wait :)

Given our previous encounter... I bet I could beat you in a 500bhip 996 while in my 310bhp 987.2 any day when it comes to lap times ;)

If its got straight bits you aint got much hope, though I do not like 996, a turbo one with 500BHP are damn quick, very quick infact, sub 8s to 100mph.

It would need to be one very tight track where only mainly 1st and 2nd gear was used or a sprint type track for the Boxster to be quicker. Any national circuit like Oulton Park or Donnington the Turbo would simply be gone and thats in the dry, move to wet conditions and not remotely close.

I have first hand experience of being at Oulton in the wet in my 911, a Cayman R and a 997.2 Turbo S along with a load of 996 and 997 GT3's. In short in the dry the Turbo S was quickest but the GT3's kept it honest. In the wet the Turbo was still flat out and so easy to drive at such pace, the GT3's were like half the speed.

I do not like the 996 and yes the 997 is a big step on but 996 Turbo are still damn bloody quick and still have huge grip.

Are CTEK still the prefered brand to go with for battery conditioners? As I've been looking at a CTEK MXS 5.0 as it seem Porsche just rebrand them.

This! :D

I'd be interest to know you thought's on both of these cars. :)

Oh I know, I was only being a cheeky tease :)

Yeah... I'd still rather a 997 / E92 over any 996.

They're still fun cars... especially a turbo as one of the main issues I had with the 996 C2S was it felt underpowered.

But I prefer the feel of the newer cars. Others might have other preferences...

Had to delay my test as I've picked up tonsillitis :(

With you on that, the newer ones just drive, well a lot nicer. :)

I am testing driving a Z06, 991 GT3 and 458 Italia next weekend, cannot wait. :D

You've got me looking at the later cars now. I think I would have to be very stubborn indeed not to go for a 997 given how much car you get in comparison to a 996 C4S. Budget would have to rise slightly I think, but close to £30k could get a <50k mileage low owner car. I just wish there were more interesting cars on the market than black with black and more black.

I wish I were in a position to be test driving the latest Porsche GT cars! Enjoy those!

My passenger window seems to have a mind of it's own. Holding down the control (passed the one-touch point) on the drivers side does literally nothing, doing it halfway makes it go down a bit, then stop, then a bit more, then up etc. Doing it from the controls on the passenger door are absolutely fine, likewise holding the open key on the fob to open the windows and sunroof it opens without issue. Drivers window is slightly temperamental but nowhere near as bad as the passenger side, mirror controls work perfectly.

Any ideas? Have tried the "reset" procedure with no luck (but I may have done it wrong, it was confusing). 991.1 coupe.

lol. It should be covered under warranty. My last 991 before this one did the same thing in the cold but I don't remember this one having a issue.

Always use CTEK and never had an issue, can also get a cig lighter adapter so just need to run a power lead into the cab.

Can anyone recommend a pre-purchase inspection in Essex?

I've got 2 names in mind:

-Porsche Dynamics, pros being they will perform a bore examination, con is that they seem less well known, but the dealer recommended.

-Gary Harris, seems more well known and is a subsidiary of Peter Morgan, although they don't seem to inspect bores routinely.

A deposit has been placed over the phone subject to a full inspection including bores.

Considering the 996C4S examples that I was looking at of similar mileage were commanding the same money I think I would have been mad to go for the older car. Fingers crossed for the inspection - the dealer is extremely confident in the car and seemed genuinely helpful and decent on the phone.

Welcome the 991.2 GTS, I'm waiting on a call from my OPC. ;)

That's a horrid retrim, they look like the standard 4 way seats though.

Finally the dream came true and I got to drive the new 991 GT3 RS, WHAT A CAR!

When is it arriving Gibbo? :p
