Porsche Owners Thread - If you own one or just like or hate them! :)

From memory when renewing the warranty on my 987 Cayman S it was about £900 for 1 year or £1200 for 2 years, then assistance was £150/250 on top of those, plus the 111-point check was £180, all ex VAT IIRC. You have to wait 90 days from the check before the warranty is active I believe unless transferred between private owners. The non-standard Carnewal exhaust may be an issue with getting the warranty on that specific example in the first place, but I'm not sure how detectable it is from just the sound, visually it's the same I think. It's a slightly odd spec, BOSE but no nav then the Sports Design wheel with paddles but doesn't have Sports Chrono from the pictures - that really allows you to change how the car drives, especially with PDK.

Was just shy of £1500 for 2 years for my 2010 987.2 including assistance. Think it was about £900-1000 for 1 year.

Does anyone have a 987 boxster? I've been eyeing them up for around 2 weeks now and so close to buying, but have some questions regarding comfort and options I should look out for.

Same boat, any must haves? I may wait and get a 981 if I can but am seriously monitoring the classifieds.

The 981 looks so much better IMO, although the facelift 987 shares the engine, PDK (if that's your thing) and PCM that you can actually use, so if you don't mind the looks it's a pretty damned good car.

What options were you wanting to know more about? The Porsche community get really obsessive about them and not always for good reason. Sports seats are nice as are xenons and sat nav, but you'd probably forget about all of that if a sports exhaust was fitted! Don't be too fussy and you'll end up with a better car as you'll have more to choose from.

A general question about boxsters: does sports chrono affect the PDK transmission and throttle response in the same way as on the 911? If so it becomes pretty desirable as an option.

Had my Bilstein B4 rear shocks and coffin arms fitted to my 911 by DW Performance in Bedford today. Also got some other bits sorted like the tension rope for the cabriolet roof was fixed too. Very impressed for the money.
:)

Even found my emergency bonnet release! :D tucked away behind the front bumper rather than in the wheel arch. It's actually a better placement.

It does, there's the Sports and Sports Plus buttons which change the shift behaviour (amongst other things).

Quite a wide range of 987s depending on budget, the Gen 2 facelift brought new engines and PDK instead of Tiptronic as the auto gearbox. If comfort is a priority then look for smaller wheels - 17s on the base cars and 18s on the S models - and the optional PASM switchable suspension is a bit softer in normal mode than the regular suspension, but can be firmed up in sport mode.

There are loads of options so get test driving and see what your preferences are :).

Yes - Sport Chrono does the same on a Boxster that it does on a 911... it was one of my "must have" options... over the exhaust even, I got mine with the base exhaust - Carnewal make some damn fine systems for not much money :)

What does sports chrono do?

Gives you sport mode which sharpens up the throttle and backs off the stability control intervention. With PDK it gives more aggressive gearshifts and holds the gears longer, and you get a sports plus mode as well which is more of the same - that holds gears all the way to the limiter and for me is only usable on track.

So guys i test drove a 991.1S yesterday in Sheffield, after having driven my 996 turbo there. It was ok but theres nowhere near the road feel im used to (powersteering plus probably not helping). Am i doing it wrong, also PDK is very, very quick-not sure anyone could use sport plus on the roads it is a bit jarring. I was a little disappointed in it. The 2nd gear is too long, i actually enjoyed the basic boxster (with PSE of course) i had as a courtesy car last year. IMO they've become just a bit too refined. Am i right in thinking a 997.2 will be a bit closer to my 996 in terms of 'rawness'?

They have become super easy to drive insanely fast without feeling challenged, they are so so capable now without even going near the limits and the extra refinement has certainly dulled them. Due to this it does kind of make the 981 Boxster and Cayman attractive purchases as they are great fun, just a little under powered. Or try to grab a GT4 as its probably Porsche's best car.

Otherwise yes a 997.2 C2S would be a good shout and as to previous post, sports chrono is a must, even more on a PDK car.

I get why people insist on having sports chrono when looking (I did when searching for mine) but having had it and never using it I definitely wouldn't let it be a deal breaker on a future car. Hitting Sport and turning PSM off gives you most of what Sport Plus does and you can do that in any car. And if you really want the extra slip in the PSM you can have it retrofitted to a non-Sport Chrono car. I like the aesthetic of the clock on the dash but personally I think there are more important options.

The spec of the black car that Hurf linked to at Cameron Sports cars is extremely good, extended leather dash and door cards is pretty rare in Boxsters and very desirable, PDLS Xenons another rare option. You will not find the paddle shift wheel on any 2009/2010 Boxsters unless it has been retrofitted so another rare and expensive (~£1k all in) option. It's had Sports Chrono retrofitted and the Carnewal exhausts is well thought of, it's basically the standard back box with some baffles removed. The only thing it's really missing is sports seats which for me was a must but not everyone will be that fussed that, I think the standard seats are a bit poor. Unusually for a car like that it's not got PASM either and I would want to make sure that it rides ok on 19" wheels and standard suspension, some report it being too firm. I have standard suspension and 18" wheels on mine and find it absolutely fine but worth driving.

It's easy to get wrapped up in Porsche options hysteria but I think much of what many people consider essential is just internet chat and excuses to be eternally on the hunt for that 'unicorn' car. And as much as people would love to tell you having the right options is absolutely crucial for resale I think that the average Porsche buyer isn't that fussy over most options and it's only the 5% of forum buyers that are that concerned with the perfect options. So just buy what suits your budget in a condition and spec that pleases you.

For me the sports chrono clock looks a bit silly. The original owner of mine clearly thought so too as they've spec'd short shift, PSE and sports seats on a Carrera S but no chrono which is a strange combo! On a manual car I wouldn't be too fussed about it, but PDK makes quite a difference so I'm told. The button can be retrofitted if you're desperate for the remap.

Interesting thoughts on the 991.1S. It sounds like more of a GT car than a sports car. Long 2nd gear is presumably for improving 0-60 times? Keep the 996TT and treat it to a 9E overhaul!

Holy moly, just read up on the 9E treatments. I think I'd better start convincing my Dad to invest asap :p
