Porsche Owners Thread - If you own one or just like or hate them! :)

You also told me the new GT-R was light years better than the old one :p something having had both I simply didn't feel at all!

As soon as I open my garage door, the Aston already wins. They're so rare and so ludicrously overpriced here, they carry immense prestige. I get more attention in the AM than I do in the MP4.

That said, I can't imagine ever driving a better performing car for under $200k in the foreseeable future. My GT-Rs will always be something I remember but I can't say that I miss it, which is surprising.

I found the new one had noticably better dampening, or certainly noticable on the terrible roads I drove them on, power wise both similar, but as always with the GTR they all supposedly make different power.

997.1 does not have this part, however I believe this is what most skip and put straight pipes there instead, gives a more 997.1 sound effect and nearly 10BHP too.

Check with FVD, Awe, Fabspeed etc. but its well worth putting the performance part in there and ask your OPC if they are OK with it, if not you need to check with Porsche if number 6 is the same with or without PSE, if its different then you need to buy it too.

The contact I gave you is a top bloke who will go out of his way to help you, so he will know or can find you the answer. :)

Thanks, he is a real nice guy and has really gone out of his way to send me a list of all the parts needed.

It's great but by 2015 they are more than 10 years old so any help would be difficult.

Mine is a 2006 model car with M97 engine, so basic upgrades, but can still suffer IMS failure, scored bores or cracked casing, though scored bores can be kept in check with good care and some say frequent oil changes reduces risk of IMS.

Someone once said as humans we can catch cancer and many other diseases, do we worry about such things? No! As such drive and enjoy because the above happening to your car is slim.

I`m looking to replace the rear tyres at the moment. I know that super sports are the best tyre at the moment, but have they sorted out the `N` rating side of things yet? Would it be worth a quick call to the local OPC to see if they would void the warranty over that?

If not I guess it will be another pair of pilot sports. The fronts are okay at the moment so probably leave them as they are. Is there anywhere like centre gravity in the south east it would be worth taking to for suspension adjustment afterwards?

Thanks

I've got a posh voice, can I please come over and borrow your aston, pose by it and pick myself up an american chick for a green card?

Pretty please? ^^

No n rating, check if your OPC are ok with it.

My tyres and brakes should be fine as I've only done 9k on them since they were fitted. I think one of the sets of brakes is about 25k old but I'd expect them to still be okay.

What's a 'condensor'?

I've emailed them back asking for a breakdown of the £610 service as I think it should only be a minor this time as the one that was done just before I purchased it looks like a major.

A little update and after 21 emails going backwards and forwards I've managed to clear everything up and get a nice little discount.

When I purchased the car it had been traded in, sent to Reading where it was given a minor service (should have received a major), I purchased the car having been told the major 60k service had been done, a few days later checked all the paperwork and found out this wasn't true so the car went back to OPC Guildford who kindly did the extra bits to make the service a major and also did the belts/chains and spark plugs.

So come round to 2 years later and I now need a minor service, brake fluid change, MOT, 111 point check and 2 year warranty extension;

Minor service - £480.00
Brake fluid change - £150.00
MOT - £54.85
111 point check - £217.00
2 year warranty - £1320.00
Total £2221.85

Managed to get it for the following in the end;

Minor service - £373.68
Brake fluid change - £75.67
MOT - £54.85
111 point check - £Free
2 year warranty - £1320.00
Total - £1824.20

which I'm happy with. They are also going to look at my seat belt as it doesn't retract as quickly or strongly as it should and to check the turning circle as when on full lock and driving slowly it feels like the wheel is rubbing against something.

Hopefully won't (shouldn't!) need tyres or brakes, OPC Guildford have been great so far with everything :)

Well 111 point check can throw up brakes, condensors, coil packs, tyres and other stuff which warranty does not cover, thats Porsches way of getting money out of you.

I had coil packs paid for by a 3rd party warranty, considering how often they go it's bad that they aren't covered

Porsche will only cover if they have records of them changing them within 2yr I think.

Its like my AUX belt was squeaking and it was done a year ago, they had to change it and its not covered by warranty, but the OPC did it FOC as it was only changed a year previous.

Porsche service is generally excellent and discount is always available, you just have to ask!

Quick follow in question. Opc said no to super sports and warranty, so ps2's it is. The available tyres are N4, does that mean I also have to change my n3 fronts to comply with warranty rules?

Have to ask them, seems some are OK as long as its matching on just one axle, but some want all 4 matching.

Best to check.

I'm surprised at that, think you need to get to know the service manager better as these sorts of things are often at the OPC's discretion. I had my GT3 serviced by the OPC but had geo and brakes done elsewhere and I made it clear that I wanted none standard geo (which was more than just adjustments, needing packers and stuff) and they had no problem covering me. Most are pragmatic and allow for some flex once they get to know you.

Ah, that makes some sense

Due to warranty work, MOTs and servicing I've had for 2-3 days at a time a Cayman R, 987 Boxster 2.9, 981 Boxster S, Mercedes C220, BMW F10 520D, Scirroco 2.0TSI are the ones I can remember.

Makes it worthwhile as you get to borrow some nice machinery to test pilot. :D
