Positive discrimination

OP, I remember as a young man in college doing a business studies course, and somehow the issue of running a nightclub came up as the main subject.

I asked how is it fair that some nightclubs/bars will allow women in for free.

I said "How is that fair?".

I got the reply "Life isn't fair!".

Lol wtf i hate disabled people as much as the next man but ..... (Joke)

You can't stop people being nice to other people by law, the world would be crap if you did.

If that company wants to waste money giving away free booze it's their loss.

Id deffo poke my eyes out if it guarantees a free pint once a decade.

I'm not even sure it is discrimination is it? Is there a policy disabled drink free?

This would make a good comedy sketch

Was the OP actually complaining or just making an observation?

Is it actually positive discrimination?

I think it can only considered positive discrimination if a pattern emerges.

From the OP post this is just one blind fella getting a free drink. Maybe the bar maid did it on her own bat. She might have a relative who is blind or disabled in some other way, and thought she'd make this guys day by buying him a pint.

Why assume a sinister motive?

People don't like seeing someone else get something nice. Whether it's a pint, money, object of monetary value.

Most people would quite happily watch your blind friend suffer and not care what he has to go through. Statistically he probably had a lot less money than a lot of people, due to his limit work choices.

A pint, or anything else given to someone that makes their life a little better, shouldn't even cross anyone's mind on it being discrimatory to them or vice versa.

There are two ways to look at this - equality should mean we’re all equal whether male, female, black, white, disabled or not. The other side is that’s being disabled is ****. I wouldn’t like to be blind. A free pint makes everyone happier

Very much this.

I'm legally blind. For me, that means everything is a blur past 2 metres and need aids to get out and about. Close-up, I can only play simple games now like Balatro and Nintendo Switch on the big screen. No Man's Sky and Baldur's Gate 3 were too detailed for me to see. I'm also in the severe category for hearing loss which makes socialising difficult. I receive a high level of PIP (personal independence payment) because of this, but I very much rather live the normal life like having a family, being able to have kids (genetics) and seeing well enough to drive, and being able to do sports, prepare meals, having better job prospects, and just generally not having to rely on others so much.

I am against discrimination of any type based on age, sex, colour, religion. But when it comes to a disability then I appreciate someone's life must be so much harder that I'm happy for them to receive any extra help or pleasantry we can give them.

You ask anyone not disabled..

OK, swap places with someone significantly disabled and they also get the pip.

I highly doubt anyones going to go.. "I'll take it.. I've been waiting for that free money and everything that comes with it"

No one chooses to be disabled.

A free drink doesn't strike me as much recompense for being blind. I'm fairly certain that if you asked the blind person concerned if they could have their sight as long as they returned the pint, they'd return the pint. This is just the usual right-wingers totally not getting the point again.

How much free Guiness have you gotten in your life?
I'll buy you one if we ever crossed paths... Or maybe something nice that doesn't taste of burnt **** :p

Punk IPA please!

But yeah, never had a free pint except at my sister's wedding when she put on a free bar for everyone.

At Disneyland Paris, I did get given a green lanyard which was a priority pass for some of the attractions. I had to show that I receive either DLA or PIP.

I would say that most discrimination is actually positive discrimination now.

You mean every discrimination laid down in statue is. What is actually happening is the opposite. Companies and people just find ways around the law and carry on the same way as before. Straight white males still dominate in every place that matters.

If you were denied buying any drinks, and only your blind friend was, then I'd say it was "positive" discrimination, but the barmaid using her own judgement to give him a free drink did not discriminate the rest of you the way you think.

If the bar had a policy of giving free drinks to all blind patrons, then that is when it really kicks in. Do you also have an issue with a Young Person or Senior Citizen railcard? :D
