the moment NV used 6 and 12Gb...

Yup, 980 had 4GB, absolutely flew off the shelves, no one gave a toss that it was only 4GB, then they released a 12GB, so anything less than that now, is to little, and not going to cut it, as the bars been moved, Ti's only 6GB, its crap, 290s are 8GB, they are now rendered crap, my 290X with its measly 4GB is utter crap, as we're at 12GB now :p

I wish people would honestly just stop with this JUNK AMD cant afford this or that..

AM SORRY!!! But do you work for AMD?? Do you have full access to all there profit data and how much cash they have?

Am, sorry don't mean to Rage but I believe that you have ZERO! information about AMDs money and what they can or can NOT spend!

Of course I have absolutely zero information about how much AMD or nvidia can afford to spend. I'm just speculating based on the info we have at the moment as more of a thought experiment. Purely my opinion and nothing else.

I'm not trying to insight rage or troll, sorry if it came across like that.

Relax and take a breath, you're taking all of this way too personal ;)

Some of you are either being wilfully dense or just aren't very bright.

GPU manufacturers don't just slap on any amount of VRAM on their cards, there's a thought process that goes into that and part of this is how much compute power the GPU has.

Cards like the 980 and R9 290X are well suited to having 4 GB VRAM because in most games, with the settings as high as possible at a playable frame rate, it will still be under 4 GB.

But cards like the 980 Ti, Titan X, and I'm assuming the new top end AMD cards, have much more compute power than their predecessors so they have the capability to actually use more than 4 GB - and they already do at 1440p and beyond.

So when I say 4 GB is 'measly' I'm obviously talking in the context of how much compute power or 'grunt' the GPU actually has. When it comes to the benefits of HBM, the consensus seems to be that the main advantage will be increased power efficiency which allows for more power to go into the GPU core itself. But ultimately 4 GB is still 4 GB. Any amount that exceeds this will result in a poor experience.

Either the new HBM cards aren't that great (which I really doubt) or this 4 GB release is somewhat desperate. They should just release their new GDDR5 lineup and wait until they actually have 8 GB HBM chips.

It's no problem and sorry I had little rage but am just sick and tired of this so called amd can't spend this or that...

It's like most guys on here turn into experts on theses companies wealth. When the truth the matter is we know nothing.

Damn straight! the 680's are still a decent card at 1080p and many will still be content in rocking one.

Its a tough choice as to which way to go when its time to upgrade, but I know one thing for sure and that's that I'm waiting for these new AMD cards to surface first.

If the NVidia is better value for the performance it offers then I'll be going NVidia. If it isn't then I'll go to AMD.

Makes sense with them being so close to release. It will all boil down to how aggressive they price their cards, although the 980Ti looks a tough one to beat. I guess we'll all soon found out what's what.

I only started to care about 3GB on my 780ti when SOM was released and wanted more Vram. Then Gta 5 was released and also could have done with a little more. So I think to myself, if this is the way gaming is going, I'm going to have to upgrade soon. However then TW3 comes out and never seems to use more than about 2.5GB.

I really don't care what the video card companies do, I really only care about how game developers plan on using the cards. I'd really like to know what the likes of Crytek think about Vram and how important they see it. Also, does it effect VR in any real way?

Much of their financial data is out there public record - all kinds of earning statements, etc. whether people have the knowledge and insight (both financial, business in general and tech development wise) to actually make sense of that even for ballpark approximates is another matter.

You can also obtain very detailed investor analysis, etc. for AMD (which currently are pretty bleak and wouldn't make good reading for the fanboys here :S - EDIT: Though long term debt is holding steady so atleast they aren't in a death spiral but they are badly in need of a big successful product launch).

If the TX wasn't 12GB, and the Ti wasn't 6GB, then no one would be batting an eyelid at the Fury only having 4GB :D

Disagree. I have a 4K screen and a 4Gb 290. The 290 clearly doesn't have the grunt to handle 4K in modern games so I have been playing older games which , generally, play decently at 4K. I am patiently waiting for this new all singing /dancing behemoth called the Fury/X and expecting at least 8Gb of vram, given we had 8Gb 290X, I cannot comprehend a 4Gb 4K card rumoured to be north of $800, probably £700+ in ours, just no way jose. So no I don't think 4Gb cuts it to be frank and I am extremely disappointed. I do not wish to go crossfire, for obvious reasons, so no upgrade card for me and its a long wait for the next gen. :(

PS. Yes I am aware there will be an 8Gb version rumoured to be august. 8Gb version should have been first is all I'm saying.

I think we should probably wait and see what the HBM can really do before deciding.

I mean we have seen some cards in the pass which have 2GB DDR3 and 1GB GDDR5 variant, and the 1GB GDDR5 version was the card of choice everytime.
