Absolutely no idea :/. These r9 290's just about do max 120fps. I have no clue about his statement either.

I presume he isn't into high framerate monitors, hence his comment about super competitive freaks. While I wouldn't word it as strongly, I do agree that 60hz 1080p monitors are the new poverty spec. I don't have a high refresh monitor, but I would expect they would appeal to most gamers, not just the CS1.4 crowd. I'd be surprised if you could get 120fps out of the witcher at 1080p on a single card.

the fact it is having to come with an AIO could also mean that it is already near it's limits, not that it has great OC potential

+1

I think they are using the AIO cooler because there is a lot of heat in a very small space around the GPU core with the HBM chips so close.

With overclocking it does not matter how much heat is produced but how concentrated it is and the Fiji cards will have most of it concentrated around the GPU in a very small space.

With GDDR5 memory there is lots of room on the PCB for the heat to spread and it is also easier to cool.

HBM will bring advantages but there will also be some negatives too.

It still doesn't make sense. You still need a 980Ti/Titan X to completely max out GTA V and Witcher 3 at 1080p if you want a true constant 60fps.

I haven't upgraded beyond 1080p because in reality there have been no cards that are powerful enough to pull off a constant 60fps at 1080p on their own in quite a few games.

The 980Ti/Titan X could change that but I will be waiting till next gen (pascal) and seeing what games are running like then before considering a monitor upgrade.

I simply can't justify spending mega money on 2 or 3 flagship cards just to get close to 60fps at 1440p or 4k.

It will be a while before 60fps at 4k will be possible on a single card on the latest games.

120fps in the latest games on a single card at 4k is dreamland for a long long while.

Is it possible that the huge bus width would result in lower clocked VRAM that runs cooler? Or would that be negated by its stacked nature?

Also, interesting they claim the Fury X can be used for 4K.

No problem using a single card for 2160p, the fun starts with 2 or more when you want to turn the settings up and run out of memory.

My GTX 960 is fantastic @2160p until...........

its what put me off them
dont get me wrong they still nice but most games are not designed to run at high fps no more, the dips u get are way more offputting
& i guess im in poverty spec :)

You could run 60fps at 1440p on witcher with 2x 290xs. 4k is a different story of course, and AA becomes much more taxing at higher resolutions so you would need to turn it off/lower it. It becomes less of a necessity at higher res though. I got a solid 60fps on GTAV with my 290s which can be bought for a pittance now, so I think higher resolutions are very much worth it. But yes, I am defending your position that these cards are still relevant for 1080p users, but much less so for 60hz monitor users since the majority of games will be easily maxed out on cheaper hardware.

OK it's getting desperate when stuff like this is news

But that's just it. There isn't really much point in playing at a high resolution , if you have to run every setting on low and make the game look like ass anyway is there?

I think the problem will be the stacked nature around the GPU making cooling harder by insulating the core to heat loss. The quoted TDP of nearly 300w is very high too and the GPU/HBM configuration will do nothing helpful in removing this.

AMD know nearly everyone who buys the Fiji cards will use them at lower resolutions and for the few that do use 2160p, yes the card will run it as advertised but only on lowered settings.

The fact is that more people buy Nvidia cards just for being Nvidia cards. Selling a similar performing card with less Vram is something the market will tolerate if it has a green sticker. I'm not saying that was s fair, or just or whatever, I'm just relaying a fact.

IF these rumours are true and we are looking at a very similar performing card with less vram and less OC potential then it is going to be a very tough sell.

This kinda sums up my fears/worries for Fury, the way I look at it is this:

Worse than GTX980ti = Needs to be <£500
Matches GTX980ti = Needs to be <£600
Beats GTX980ti by <10% = Needs to be <£700
Beats GTX980ti by >10% = Charge what you like it's a monster.

They are not easy targets to hit considering what the card must cost to make.

LOL

I put GPU boxes in the attic until I come to sell the card, I don't actually care what they look like in the slightest, I know they contribute almost nothing to the card cost but I still don't have any interest in them, prefer brown boxes like my Intel SSD came in.

-----

Out of interest when was the last time anyone bought a GPU direct from AMD anyway? They usually come from partners even the reference models, my MSI Reference 290 has a BF4 themed box and my Sapphire one had additional decals on the card.
