Fury X is 54% quicker than 290X with just a 10% heat bump. That seems to tally with the leaked Firestrike bench which has it trading blows with the TX.

Assuming that is correct, if they can launch the Fury X at £599inc then happy days.

If it trades blows with the TX then it will trade blows with the 980ti too which means it will have to be <£550 or it will be price matched against a cooler more efficient card with equal performance/VRAM.

Even if the 390X is just a 290X re-brand with a TDP drop, it will still be as quick as a 980 and beat it in a far few benches due to the 8GB Vram.

Lulwat? if it's just a rebrand of a card that's slower than the 980 it will be as quick as a 980? The 290X is closer to the 970 than it is the 980.

So if it trades blows with a 980ti but has less vram and is more expensive, then that is good?

Based on those performance metrics, I expect it to trade blows with a TX not the 980ti.

Assuming the Fury X has an AIO water cooler then it can't really be compared apples-to-apples with a air-cooled 980ti on cost, it needs to be compared with a TX.

If it has a water cooler I am also expecting the Fury X to have a greater range of OC capability than a bog standard or mid-ranged Nvidia air-cooled card (as you would expect).

I don't see the 4GB Vram as being a problem, it may be the cards advantage in terms of OC and Heat.

4GB RAM and an AIO cooler could make the Fury X a bit of an OC beast.

As you can see from the bench contests we run in this forum, my cards are amongst the quickest reference 980s of the forum members here and AMDMatts cards can beat them in many scenarios.

I run with water and custom bios on my 980s and the 290X holds its own.

And so if they re-spin the 290X into a lower TDP card with 8GB of Vram it will place it slightly beyond the 980 (Non-ti) in terms of performance.

Or you could compare it to the EVGA GTX980ti hybrid which also has an AIO, 2GB more VRAM and costs £650, that's the yard stick I am using for price/performance.

I suppose a well cooled Fury X could just about hold a 599 price tag. The reference 980ti doesn't seem to be especially cool or quiet and the decent board partner cards are over 600, when they are in stock. 4gb VRAM is the only potential fly in the ointment.

Sure I don't have a problem with that and I look forward to the head-to-head but knowing EVGA they will make a total of 10 cards, post them to reviewers so they can shout 'Faster than AMD equivalent' and then you won't be able to actually get hold of one at list price.

And then you will need to mod the BIOS to get it to OC Properly.

I run EVGA cards in my rig but they are classic at announcing products and then not delivering them for 6 months.

The thing is though, most people don't overclock their cards, let alone flash custom BIOS so for most users the 980s advantage over the 290X is bigger than the 290Xs advantage over the 970. A lower TDP 290X with 8GB is still going to be beaten by the 980 in the reviews and in the experience of most owners.

That's a fair shout but here in this forum, I totally ignore what the other plebs do with their cards. Most plebs no doubt run 4GB Ram on a Quad Core Conroe CPU and buy their shiny new cards expecting them to perform as per review.

No, the performance crown won't be won or lost in reviews, it will be decided in this forum with users who know what they are doing and proper rigs (and all the windows and doors open with a B&Q fan blowing at computer......at 4am).

The TX is the card to beat, I am hopeful that AMD have gotten close to it and maybe even pipped it in some scenarios.

Roll on next week !
