Post any 690 news here please.

Only 4 gigs of VRAM onboard, they're flogging single Gpu cards with that amount, I would have thought 3 gig per Gpu would have been preferable, especially with that that price tag. Sticking to their tradition of not inuding enough onboard ram on their dual Gpu cards. =\

you'll have to wait for the 790 for that, this 690 looks nice but is total overkill for 1080p tv

I suspect the reason for the price tag is that Nvidia have such a limited supply so they can price them at £800 and they can still sell all inventory, plus the 7990 isn't out.

Also it is very unlikely the 7990 will be able to touch the 690 due to the increased power requirements of 7970, with the 690 they can basically have 2 full fat 680's running at almost 680 speeds, I can't see AMD being able to do that with 7990

Not sure what kind of games people are playing to warrant paying £800 for a graphics card. Honestly feel sorry for people buying these to play what is mostly games ported from consoles. If your that interested in performance, get a £400 card now and another £400 one in 2 years to replace it.

You'll have more redundancy with 2x 680. If one fails you still have the other to tide you over 'til you get a replacement. I suppose there's twice the chance of a failure with 2 cards though but both at the same time would be unlikely.

Now this is interesting:

Improved Frame rate Metering

Kepler introduces hardware based frame rate metering, a technology that helps to minimize stuttering. In SLI mode, two GPUs share the workload by operating on successive frames; one GPU works on the current frame while the other GPU works on the next frame. But because the workload of each frame is different, the two GPUs will complete their frames at different times. Sending the frames to the monitor at varying intervals can result in perceived stuttering.

The GeForce GTX 690 features a metering mechanism (similar to a traffic meter for a freeway entrance) to regulate the flow of frames. By monitoring and smoothing out any disparities in how frames are issued to the monitor, frame rates feel smoother and more consistent.

I don't know why anybody is surprised by the price of 800 quid, as I said it would be several days ago, the dual GPU cards are always more expensive than 2 single GPU cards, and lower clocks so not as fast as a proper SLI solution

Don't think so Andy, think historically they have typically been a bit less.

590 was what £650 on average at launch, I don't think 580s were averaging £325 at that time (they are only now)
6990 was pretty much double 6970 as I recall.
5970 was £480 when 5870 was around £300
295 was £430 when 280 was £280

Nvidia are doing it for bragging rites... it looks bling

you might find the 7990 is better, after all, that's 3gb Vram each card.

I've wondered about this myself. I understand people want to future proof and at that price range I'd want a good four years myself. It all comes down to timing really, I don't know what the top DX9 card of it's day was but i doubt it had that much of a lifespan as soon as DX11 came out and made it obsolete for those wanting cutting edge performance. The new xbox 720 & PS4 graphics are rumored to be based on 7000 series radeons so DX11.1 should have a long life ahead of it. I think we're looking at a good 7-8 years of DX11 dominance up until windows 9 and the post 1540 / PS5 consoles. Maybe a 690 will be good until 2020 :).

That said though, nvidia and amd are in this to make money and so while raw performance wise you might get 8 years out of a 690, they'll spring new tech to make you upgrade in 3-4 years max anyway, like they did with tesselation and so I'm agreeing with the £400 now, £400 in two years to keep your cards technology up to date.

*Obviously if you have the money, a 690 now and an 890 in two years is an option.

lets face it, this card is aimed at either epeen or 3 monitor setups, in some games now this card will struggle slightly on a 3 screen setup so in 8 years? you've got to be kidding

Yeah I'm just thinking about single screen and day dreaming about that raw power. I just went from a 9500gt to a 6850 so I'm not batting with the big boys yet.

you'll need more than 2Gb Vram per card in 2 years time.... have you seen that new game coming out next year that Gibbo uploaded here.

there is no way a 690 will last 8 years..... good grief, we might even be able to afford Oled tv soon and that has a massive res..i'd be very careful here because it looks like technology is about to lurch forward again like it did with Crysis.....i would be tempted to upgrade again next summer

It only takes one game to render a card useless (take BF3 for example) and lots of us rush out and buy a new GPU.

Useless is a little strong however when you compare the ultra gfx on the PC to the gfx on a PS3, the difference is night and day. My Daughters boyfriend plays BF3 on PS3 and after seeing BF3 on my PC, he asked if I would build him a PC.

It is 'keeping up with the Jones' as the old saying used to go. It does not matter what it is for some...Clothes (why buy Paul Smith/Versace/Gucci when Asda do a lovely range). Cars (why buy a 20K car when a 7K car does the same job) etc etc.

My point is we don't need this new tech but something in some of us makes us want it.
