Post count ... or years of service?

My, aren't we argumentative this morning? When did I ever say I was only talking about people with 5-figure post counts? I simply said "high post counts", which is obviously subjective and open to interpretation. My interpretation is those members who have, say, 2000+ post counts.
I couldn't remember what your post said actually and it was too much bother to go and find it :p I wouldn't say 2000 was remotely high for a popular, busy forum which has been going for five years since the last nuke, incidentally.

proper punctuation and grammar is what indicates a good poster to me.its not the be all and end all but posts writen in the style of this one just seem lazy and inarticulate. their grammar is usually indicative of they're posting strategy; a spammer or troll

This just irks me a bit. :p

I agree.

One of the tendencies that irritates me the most is the creeping use of 'text speech' in posts. I really wish people would stop using incorrect spellings. After all, how difficult is it to type 'that' instead of 'dat'?!

Is either even that important?

So long as you have something valuable to contribute then what does it matter the years or post count? As previously said in this thread, some people with hardly any posts at all sometimes come out on top in an argument - but why shouldn't they in all honesty.

Tbh, if I'm ever gonna make any judgement, it'll be that an extremely high post count shows a lack of getting off the computer!!

In accordance with your own rules I pronounce you a poor poster ;) :p

I think you'll find that was purposely implemented to help illustrate the point, much like the spelling of 'writer' and the subtle misuse of the semi-colon. :D

Oops - I did wonder if that was your intention actually :)

Yes, a lack of a social life as well ;)

tbh that was implicit, but then you're judging high poster anyway, some people may only have 200 posts, but spend their entire day on the forum, where as someone might have 5000+ posts over 2-3 years, but you judging their post count would say they have no life...

so whats import? your length of service, or your post count? and why are some people obsessed with how many posts they have made?
Neither, it's the quality of your posts. If anything I'm more inclined to pity people with a high post count, because Christ, how much time do you have to spend on here to get it that high?

Well clearly you'd look at their join date and make a judgement. I know people do lurk, but the percentage of people that lurk to the extreme you suggest must be negligable.

I have 3000 posts and have been a member almost 5 years, I don't lurk and I have a life. Now, it takes some doing to amass more than ten times that amount in the same time period I'd suggest.

I don't think post count and time since joining can go into a forumula to work out how long a person spends on OCUK each day, there are many more variables to consider. For example, I could have just posted "high post count = loser" then gone onto the next thread and posted there, but I didn't.

i wasnt suggesting any extreme, there are large amounts of people on this forum, with minimal posts, with not so new join dates, yet you would say they had a life compared so someone with an 'average' post count, with a newer join date.

you dont know their posting habits, or their social, or work status, for example they may work from home, and therefore find it easier to have a quick look, or post on the forums every half an hour, i know a lot of people here work in the office environment, and therefore have the ability to have a quick post on the forum from time to time in their working day, does this mean they have no social life?

my opinion is that we cannot judge anyone on here by post count or join date, the person who has the highest could also be the biggest party animal in the real world, and the poster with the least posts, but longest join date could be the one who spends most time on the foum, or any combination, post count, or join date are TERRIBLE indictators of a persons privite life

i dont think so, many of their posts could be short, one word answers, or a picture, or as stated above, they may have bought some of another member with the proceeds going to charity, they may actually only have 2000 posts that they themselves have made, which could mean they have more of a life than you do, or not as the case may be

I think you're clutching at straws now TBH.

Clearly not everyone with a massive post count won't have a social life, but there are only so many hours in the day, so even if the majority of their posts aren't meaningful, then it's still a time consuming pursuit.

If their posts aren't meaningful, then they are simply enforcing the perception of the sterotype.

You can't have it both ways!

I totally agree - by saying a high post count = no life doesn't mean that applies to every single member on here. But there's only so many hours a day and I can bet that there are some fairly addicted members on here!

i never implied they were meaningful ;)

however it can't be denied that most of the people on this forum with a colossal (im talking 20k+) post count, ie CBS (but not dirtydog :p) do have very meaningful posts AND a social life, or at least they make attempts to insinuate they do.

arent you just perpetuating the waste of space poster? as you have 3000 posts+, your wasting your morning on the forum, and your posts are in no way meaningful

the only reason im on here is because im on holiday from work, and am waiting to go out to town, this could be the same for you, but i doubt it...

edited: thought you were arcade fire (confusion of names) even so, point still stands

The truth is that you have absolutely no idea what social life these people have. All you have is their word and that cannot be trusted. My approach is far more logical, if they are spending their time on here then they are not out with their friends or partners or whatever. Common sense really.

I don't think DirtyDog is any more of an accomplished poster than anyone else TBH. Personally I don't care for him, or a number of other forum members but it's easy enough for me to simply ignore the posts I am not interested in. There are very few of the high post count posters I hold any regard for, or deem their posts to be meaningful.

Who has 5000+ posts? If you are going to try and label me, then firstly get your facts right and secondly make the label accurate instead of posting utter rubbish!

Oh, I am at work ATM, killing some time while I wait for some software to finish what it's doing :p
