Finally gave in and got mine insured today, even managed to get an MOT this afternoon which was the first time it's been on the road for three years.

Took me ages to shop around for insurance having lost my no claims while the bike was in storage.

Cheers, Simon.

How long was it in storage? Some insurance companies accept NCD built up in the last three years.

Took it off the road after a trip to Le Mans in 06 but cannot remember exactly when the insurance lapsed.

Talking with Bennetts today the only company happy to accept a three year break was Norwich Union who wouldn't have been competitive, settled on a policy with HSBC Gothic via Bennetts at £635.00, fully comp £550.00 XS.

Passed the MOT but received an advisory re spongy front brake, will get that fixed next week along with an oil & filter change and new chain. It was put into storage after a major service so had belts, clearances done along with new tyres.

Almost forgot I need to get a new alarm immobiliser fitted the original Meta failed during storage.

Cheers, Simon.

Howdy all.

Been offered a 1993 mint condition CBR600 with service history, owned by a college engineer, really is in great nick.
Regardless of the money for it(700 squids ish!), whats to look out for in particular at this age?

Cheers!

Might have been worth going with the one accepting 3yrs old no claims because then next year you'd have your entire no claims discount for ALL companies. Depends just how much more expensive it was :) .

Does anyone (Draeger most likely) know what temperature the radiator fans should be kicking in on my RSV Mille R? They come on at about 95 degrees at the moment which seems quite high (I know big twins do run hot, but I thought the fans might come on earlier to help). Went for a ride to Bridlington the weekend before last and I was getting 105 degrees coolant temperature whilst sat in some traffic!

Nothing much really- the only common problem is the camchain tensioner, you get a rattle from the head, especially when cold. Easy and cheap fix.

Other than that, just the usual things. What sort of mileage? If it's in great nick bite his arm off for £700- superb bikes, excellent engines- below 10,000 rpm they muller most modern 600s.

£700 sounds like a good deal.

If you can, take a test ride or if the seller doesnt want to let you ride on it, tell him to ride up and down a street, while you watch, just so you can see the bike in action. Ask him to go up and down the gears.

Another thing to take note of is the ease with which the bike starts. If the bike is starting first time, every time, then thats a good sign.

Also, take a look at the condition of the chain. Obviously, at £700, you are looking for a cheap run around that you aren't going to have to spend money on, immediately. If the chain is too loose/long and is at its maximum adjustment level, then you may have to buy a new chain/sprockets immediately, which will set you back about £80.

Another thing to check are the tyres. They should have decent tread left on them. If not, you will end up having to buy new tyres, soon after buying the bike, which will set you back around £100/tyre.

Don't rush things when inspecting the bike, take your time to check all parts of the bike. If the owner isn't hiding anything, then he won't mind you looking at everything.

Also, check the paperwork. Take your time while inspecting these documents.

It's a Honda, so these things are very reliable - don't be put off by high mileage.

For £700 though, don't expect too much.

Take a look on adtrader.co.uk and autotrader.co.uk, just to get an idea of what £700 buy's you.

Let us know how it goes.

Indeed, I have replaced 2 in my F5 and the latest one only lasted around 6000 miles :(

Replacing it with an manual tensioner is sometimes the best option in cases.

Yeah deffo, check if teeth on sprockets are hooked, a good test is to try and pull the chain from rear of sprocket with fingers... it should not move much

Also check for tight spots / kinked & siezed links.. both good signs chain is shot

Check for spongy brakes, could mean fluid change in order / new brake lines if not braided items... or shot calipers / master cylinder. (though a good clean is usually all thats needed)

If lever pulls back to bars it's got 'issues'

Here is my steed, hasnt moved in 3 years, new battery and fired up instantly just needs front break un-seased and an ignition barel.

Fired up and sounded a bit rough but soon smoothed out and sounded like a true V4

This is mine. My first ever bike.

Passed in March this year.

Got this from a guy who took it to Spain when he retired.
I love it. Still learning of course but for my 1st bike it certainly does me.

Love it..
