Not sure I was taking the cue from the OP correctly.

So many have already been mentioned.... Bill Hicks, Jack Dee, Eddie Izzard, Ronnie Barker, Bill Bailey, Spike Milligan and Peter Sellers are all amazing.

Also Peter Cook & Dudley Moore, Dylan Moran and Peter Ustinov perhaps not recognised as a comedian but certainly did the funniest 'An Audience with...' I have ever seen.

No doubt as I think about it I will think of even more :)

Bill Bailey is the comic I most admire. I think he's incredibly witty, with excellently observed comedy and contemporary satire. Plus an extrememly talented musician.

My comedy heroes are all the poor buggers who write something clever, original and a bit daring only to have their idea pulled apart by television executives and moulded into an inoffensive sit-com vehicle for whatever ******** actor pops into their minds, while people like Alistair McGowan are being given enough air-time to start a revolution and Matt Lucas is hailed as a genius despite the only thing slightly amusing about him is his fat, bald, bespectacled, gay head. :(

So, go on then, name your comedy heros...

"Now, I would just like to point out that this film is displaying a distinct tendency to become silly. Now, nobody likes a good laugh more than I do... except, perhaps my wife... and some of her friends. Oh, yes, and Captain Johnson. Come to think of it, most people like a good laugh more than I do, but that's beside the point! I'm warning this film not to get silly again! Right!"

And later....

"Right! Stop that! It's silly, Very silly indeed! Started off as a nice little idea about old ladies attacking young men, but now it's just got silly! His hair's too long for a vicar, too, and you can tell those are not proper keep-left signs! Clear out, the lot of you!"

Cleese's eulogy for him was just brilliant - it's on Youtube, can't link to it as it's laden with swearies :D
