Post Your Home Cine & HiFi Kit...

If you're only 2.0 Kosta, moving to a decent 5.1 setup will be mind blowing when paired with a PJ. What speakers do you have currently?

My next addition will be a projector. I sit about 4m from a decent 50" Panasonic plasma and it just isn't big enough to match the experience offered by my speaker setup (which I plan to reluctantly overhaul next year)

I'm currently rocking my Dali Concept 6 floor standers that I bought circa 2004! For years they were powered by my Marantz PM7200 stereo amp. I love them.

When I first moved in, I very quickly put up a cheap projector screen and built a pelmet around it. The idea was to sort something more permanent (and less plain) a year or two after we've moved in to allow for snags to be sorted before really decorating etc. Just so happens that I waited 4 years.. oh well :D

Last year I did a bit of work to make the living room a bit more interesting instead of a plain wall. The only things I bought were the Marantz amp and fireplace really, I went speaker shopping but never committed.
Literally the only thing I paid someone to do was plaster the chimney breast, so pretty pleased with myself, even if it was a simple enough build.

A few more pics in here https://photos.app.goo.gl/LTTnBe8LNqSCbM598 but some below:

Last pic highlights that it's dying for a centre speaker and for the TV to be wall mounted above it!

Thanks guys. It all started from a drawing when I was bored :D

With regards the towing of the speakers, I've always gone with what Dali put in their manuals - and have seen it mentioned in the reviews of them also:

The fireplace is a Gazco electric fireplace. It took me a long time to find someone who actually had one on display rather than just shoving a glossy catalogue in my face. It's definitely one of my favourite bits of the room now.

Setup looks great!

I'd have swapped the rad for a vertical wall mounted one personally.

I have DALI speakers (Zensors) that also don't need toeing in like yours, mine are just forward facing.

I echo sentiment above, centre speaker and wall mounted TV would be good additions. Are you on a 2.0 setup?

Thanks.

Moving the rad was the priority to allow the right space either side for the chimney breast. It is something I'd also like to do but zero rush to make any purchases in this climate!

I have the Zensor 3s in my kitchen on stand mounts. Love them! They're only attached to a Sonos amp as well, they'd sound even better with a bit more power behind them (maybe another thing to buy when Covid-19 settles down).

Yes currently just 2.0 setup, literally just replaced the amp so I can add speakers later either as a complete package or one by one. I have run (through the chimney breast) ceiling speaker cables too. So I am hoping to go 5.1.4 eventually, but it will likely go from 2.0 --> 2.1 --> 3.1 --> 5.1 --> 5.1.2 --> 5.1.4 - If ever :D

Sounds good, I think going 5.1 is the most impacting change, but yeah fair one about not spending too much right now as well :)

Really impressive transformation there, it's a well thought out and executed TV and fireplace area.

Just need a bigger TV mounted on the wall of the inset area to make it look even cleaner, just like your sketch! But I understand you don't really need a much bigger TV with the project screen for film and evening use.

I would still toe in the speakers as 'good practise' as they are still a standard cubic shaped tower speaker with a couple of mid/bass drivers, a port and a soft dome tweeter. They are not using anything out of the ordinary and 'linear directivity principle' sounds like made up marketing spiel :p

If you go for 5.1 and don't want rear speakers on show, then I'd highly recommend hidden tripole speakers behind the sofa. I use some wee M&K K4 Triople speakers, sitting on the subs behind the sofa, but firing upwards. This essentially copies the M&K Column Surround Speaker setup and works very well, giving a spacious rear surround effect that has a lot of height and stops you being able to locate the position of the rear speaker. Sort of like a psuedo Rear/Atmos bodge :D

I would guess that they are voiced to sound flat at a slightly off axis position. Therefore if they are toed in slightly you may have the highs being accentuated slightly.

That would be my guess and yes you are right, marketing spiel trying to sound clever and not actually explaining itself.

Hey all,
Wondering if you can recommend bookshelf speakers sub £200?
It will be in a small living room (3.5m long x 3.75m wide, carpeted) but used exclusively for films (projector + 100" screen).
Currently have Mordaunt Short M10s as I needed something small/cheap a couple of years ago.
Will be paired with an Onkyo TX-NR515, and will be sitting on the B-Tech BT77 wall mounts so relatively close to the wall.

I know ideally I'd try some out, but not possible at the moment for obvious reasons.
Looking at reviews/forums, I think possibly either the Wharfedale Diamond 220 (£120), Monitor Audio Bronze 1 (£120), or Bronze 2 (£170), but some say if the Bronze 2s are close to the wall then that's no good.
Anyone got any thoughts?
Thanks.

I would have thought the Bronze 2 would be better than most close to the wall, given that they’re front ported..

Whathifi said "We found them a little lumpy when placed right up against a wall and achieved the best sonic balance around 30cm out into the room.".

And someone else in a different forum said he preferred them when they were 12-24 inches out from the wall.

Hmm.
