Post Your Home Cine & HiFi Kit...

Nice job, Adam.

Here's my computer audio setup.

Laptop / Desktop (SPDIF)
Cambridge Audio DACMagic (2008)
NAD 320BEE
B&W DM601-S3 / Beyerdynamic DT 770 PRO

Need a longer TOSLINK to mini-optical cable for the laptop ;p

Nice setup, wush! I'm aiming for something similar I think. Probably going to get the DACMagic, C355BEE and B&W 685. Already have a pair of DT770 Pros too!

How does your amp handle the speakers? Also, why not make use of the USB connection between your laptop and DAC?

I'm very happy with the performance of the amp. My only niggle is that at a particularly low volume, the left/right volume balance suddenly becomes uneven (issue with the quality of the volume knob assembly..?)

The laptop chucks out optical SPDIF natively so I (unfounded) guess at that being more robust than whatever driver the USB interface would use.

The 770 Pros are great. I like the sound and fit best in comparison to the highish-end phones I've owned before (HD650s, HD595s and narrowly the K701s) :)

Sweet, should be an excellent player :D

O james very nice you sorted your cabinet situation out. Have you just plonked one LACK ontop of the other ? May I suggest you take them apart and build a proper 'dual lack' it would look better with the one middle part, although I'm not sure about the weight of each of your bits.

lol, for the time being....yes. not really sure how to tackle that with the two LACK bookshelfs. It's only really the end pieces that HAVE to be screwed in but if i screw an upper side piece in i cant then screen the lower in, or visa versa. They arent like the LACK tv units where you just put the bolt through the hole and tighten the 'nut' from the side, on the bookself units it screwes directly in to the panel. you can see the problem there....lol. It's ok for now, with the amp and pc in there it doesnt slide about much :p

I actually have the same problem with my headphone amplifier (Corda Move)! To be honest I don't really have much idea as to what could be causing it, but it doesn't bother me that much because, as you said, it's only at low volumes.

I went to demo a pair of 685s today, along with the Monitor Audio BR2s. I don't know what it was, but both seemed a little light on the bottom end. I took in a variety of stuff to try out, so I don't think it was that. Maybe it was the way they were set up, I don't know. Perhaps I'm just used to having low frequencies that are emphasised a bit.

Have you heard any other speakers? I'm interested in how you'd rate your B&Ws against them.

I've got the 685s around a foot from the wall and the bass is good, nice and tight....there isn't a ton of it but then again they're not massive speakers (smaller than the previous series) and what they output is nice and high quality. Plus I just whack my sub on when I want some fun :D

Whatever speakers I get, for the time being, will have to sit around an inch or two from the wall on my desk which isn't exactly ideal! How is this likely to affect the sound (bearing in mind these are front ported)?

Oh and sorry for chatting so much in the picture thread!

Should only just boost the bass - as they're front-ported it shouldn't cause any adverse side effects except perhaps too much bass, but then imo the tweeter on the 685s can far outpower the midrange/bass at higher volumes anyway.

The clarity on voices and classical music, strings in particular, is fantastic. As is the sound of percussion in any type of music...I never knew there was so much to a cymbal!

Man your not wrong, just set it all up and I can't believe how good the up scaling is. It now looks as good as Sky HD. No idea how it compares to blu-ray as I don't have a player yet. But sweet and for £60 :D, I'm well chuffed, thanks for the rec. Need a new camera though and tv stand. Had to stack it on top of the amp with 2 dvd cases to allow airflow. Hopefully the amp wont over heat. Shall find out just got the Iron man so will be watching it.
