Whilst playing Flanker 2.5 online in a mass guns-only furball, I managed to find myself entangled in a low-level dogfight with one of the best players in the game. I'd disengaged from the furball to return to base to rearm, as I was down to about 20 rounds of ammo for my 30mm cannon. (Not much when you consider that you're firing from an aircraft moving at high speed in 3 dimensions at another object moving in a similar fashion). I was streaking along a river valley at low level to avoid being spotted, when I noticed another aircraft doing the same thing a few km away. We must have seen each other at the same time, as we both broke hard into each other, trying to pull lead to get a shot with our respective aircraft's guns. What followed was a 10 minute epic, in a game where most fights were decided in the 1st few turns, we had a proper drawn out battle right on the deck.
It ended when I managed to force him out in front from the rolling scissors, letting me line up on him for a shot. I loosed off the remaining ammo I had in one long burst, managing to hit him on the right rear fuselage and tailplane with about 10-12 rounds, the rest passing behind him. Unfortunately it wasn't enough to shoot him down though. In spite of the fact that he'd lost an engine and a vertical tail plane, he was still able to limp home and land, whereas a lesser pilot like me probably would have ejected and conceded the kill. Still, I was pretty made up, I'd held my own against one of the best pilots in the game for nearly 10 minutes, and come within a hair's breadth of scoring a kill at his expense. He was even gracious enough to admit as much after the game in ICQ.
