England wins the world cup but no one can watch it due to black out, I'm calling that nowscare mongering gas supply shortage was a replay of 2018 beast from the east - where we would need some EU/continental gas to keep us going from our friends.

California avoided blackout by getting consumers to turn (AC) thermostats up this year, and pre-cooling their houses to reduce peak demand slot, when everyone would, nonetheless, be cooking ..
if everyone does a little, is the UK consumer capable of that ?... maybe time-shift the world cup matches, showing the final maybe too much of a risk.

'we got him'
I think triggers broom analogy for four tory leaders is apt,
or, had seen this #It is already becoming a slight cliché to suggest Liz Truss could be compared to Eric Morecambe. Like him, she has all the right notes, but not necessarily in the right order. In her conference speech ...

Alternative to the current situation in Ukraine? What is your alternative?
A lot of people live near enough to work that they are potentially in the same service area for electricity.Come to think about it working from home..... if there's a power cut in the area people will have to return to work as well.
Unless there's a power cut at work that is. Fun times.

That ship sailed about 5+ months ago. We’ve masterfully put ourselves in a position of Zugzwang. There are no good options. So now I just observe, let those who wanted this, figure out how to get through without ending humanity. Good luck
Even if you have power you may still not be able to work as a home worker if your main office is dark that you connect to, or your customers are dark.
How many computers, routers, switches etc in businesses will be failing due to being power-cycled for the first time in years, or the comedy option where config changes were made in memory but not saved to disk, or even worse changed on disk to something wrong but not live until a reboot. Seen all of these scenarios a bunch of times over the years.
I work in a regional office where the computers that control the id badge activated locks on the doors are in another part of the country etc.
They are talking about cuts between 4pm and 9pm - so good luck with no working traffic lights during rush hour.
I wonder how many companies are currently trying to hoover up as many generators as possible to try and keep these vital bits of equipment running.Even if you have power you may still not be able to work as a home worker if your main office is dark that you connect to, or your customers are dark.

Think it's bad here, places in Spain aren't allowed A/C to go below 27C to save power. I missed the relief of nipping into a shop to escape the heat when i was there the other week!
I agree there were no good options but we were overly hasty in our sanctions. I can only imagine we (the West) thought Ukraine would lose quickly and we could go back to normal soon after. Instead we're paying Putin as much or more than we were paying before and we've knackered oureconomies because we didn't actually analyse our options in our rush to be seen to act. We could have fed Ukraine the weapons to win this war without stopping buyinnh Russian gas. The financial system implications may be worse in the long run because we have encouraged the autocratic states to decouple from US/European systems by showing our willingness to weaponise them. There never were good options - Putin isn't a very naughty boy who accidentally put his armies in Ukraine and now regrets it, as all too many seem to see it.

Business will be shut. You will be forced to use your holidayEven if you have power you may still not be able to work as a home worker if your main office is dark that you connect to, or your customers are dark.

We had blackouts regularly all through the 80's and even after moving to a decent area of London in the 90's we still had the occasional blackout about once a year until it stopped happening in the late 90's. It's just a fact of life and threads like these just shows how soft and comfortable society has become
We were thankful of that during the storm outage. Huddled round the woodburber at home but luckily the Chinese takeaway a few roads away still had powerDifferent supplies

Can we all agree Liz Truss is crazy? She doesn't want to do anything to mitigate this beforehand because according to her it should be up to the individual to decide.Even if you have power you may still not be able to work as a home worker if your main office is dark that you connect to, or your customers are dark.

Oh I imagine anywhere that's not Blue will be made blue. While the choice of areas to be cut will be meant to be chosen by the national grid, I'd be amazed if there weren't ham-fisted attempts at political interference.
Hell will freeze over before the center of the universe (London) gets it's powercut. Every town and city north of Reading would be without power for a week before London sees 1 minute of it.
