Potential power outages this winter

What's the point if no heating anyway no point in having power blackout

Unless it's to save gas for when the power is back on

What do you mean?

they're talking about electricity blackouts and one of the reasons they're talking about that is possible shortage of gas, from which we make the electricity.

They're damned if they do and damned if they don't.

"Worst case scenario we might see power cuts" - omg they're fear mongering.

"everything appears normal and OK"/say nothing *power cuts happen* - omg why didn't they warn us, they must have known

Its not the National Grid that are fear mongering its the media.

Every time there is any sort of forecast the headline is always the worst case scenario..

TBH, if the wholesale electricity goes right through the roof this winter, it won't be gas shortages, it'll be the government will be turning off people's electricity in an attempt to stop the price cap bankrupting the country.

I just about remember the cuts in the 70s. I remember them not being particularly pleasant. Even as a preschool infant.

I think nowadays, any blackouts would have a much more dramatic effect on the people's lives, so it wouldn't be a case of put a candle and a jumper on. Plus I think there would be a fair bit of civil unrest. Especially given they're talking about blackouts in "selected areas".

selected areas means anythng outside the M25

Wales will be first on the list as it's fairly easy to make Snus Snus with a sheep by candlelight.

BBC with a good ol’ bit of scaremongering. Even if it happened what do they want us to do about it?

Its been on the cards for a few winters now. I got a generator a few years ago with sufficient capacity to run fridge, central heating, internet and lights so no worries if there's a longer cut.

Same I have a Genny with 20L in the shed as a back up and what we used to use camping. Might come in handy haha

I have one of those, it's on 4 wheels too, built-in climate control as well. :D

The only problem is prolong power cuts would mean people would lose a lot of money on frozen foods. A few hours would be fine if you don't open it.

Unless it happens when it's freezing out then it's not so bad. Just bag it up in the recycling bin.

Depends on your freezer too. During the storms we had no power for over a day and I was a bit concerned about the freezer stuff but it was still well frozen by the time the power came back on.

It's different this year due to Ukraine and the energy crunch. A persistent cold but calm winter would but put tremendous strain on the gas and electric supply.

The solution is rotating power outages around the UK, particularly if they need to shut down gas power plants to ensure domesitc gas supplies are maintained for heating which will be viewed as the most critical thing to provide.

Although if your electricity goes out your boiler stops too, if you're referring to house heating.

Yeah, but your house doesn't immediately drop in temperature, it takes hours.

Depends what kind of heating you have and what your house is made of.

We have electric wall heaters. When you turn those off, you start to notice the cold pretty soon.
