Potential PS4.5 With Better CPU+GPU ?

I'm enjoying my PS4, even taken over from my PC gaming. Some people are just never happy, a few games look amazing and others don't.

If people cared so much about graphics they would just get a top end or mid range PC, but others want the ease of use and playing on a TV.

Nothing better than sitting on the Sofa with a can of beer, some food and playing on a big TV either by yourself or with mates.

lol have you looked at any of the budget PC lately. A amd 7950 is so old and even that gpu is 2 times better then any of the consoles

A budget PC would not out perform the X1 or PS4. Perhaps on paper yes but PC has many overheads without the ability to code to metal. Devs get far more performance from console and digging deep into it, fine tuning for one spec with overheads.

PS

I love PC gaming and have quite a high powered rig. Spent a fair few thousand over the years but does it massively out perform consoles? Nah, not enough to be honest.

This I actually ended up getting rid of a top end rig 4960x 780ti sli fully watercooled motherboard included. Reason for getting rid was the ps4 kept my attention more and the pc just had issues after issues that the console didn't and the performance whilst yes the pc had higher fps the graphics were not all that different and the ps4s fps was enough for me.

Theres a lot of decent videos where the performance really isn't hugely different between a £400 PC and a PS4 for example. You also have to consider that games cost cheaper on the PC so over time it can get a decent amount back too cover upgrades.

However I do agree you generally will spend more, but a PC is a much better asset overall when compared too a console as they offer a huge array of features console won't every get, generally larger game library and so on. I typically build PCs for friends around £800 and its vastly out performances consoles, I remember one of my friends getting so excited that he had to send me a live stream where he couldn't believe things looked so much better then his PS4.

PS

I exclusively game on a PS4 right now.

Yeah PC games are usually cheaper, then again if you buy disc only you can sell a PS4 copy and get some money back where as with PC your game is linked to your Steam/Origin or other account. Plenty of people i know buy disc and complete and resell, maybe losing out on a couple of quid to a tenner at max dependant on how quick they are.

Both have their pros and cons, end of the day you know what your getting with a console. I've had both PC's and consoles for as long as I remember and it's always been PC first but with the PS4 it has slowly taken over as I know exactly what to expect. I know that the performance won't be affected by drivers, i won't need to edit config files with fixes or to fine tune settings or use work arounds to get things working.

End of the day it's horses for courses but this gen is shaping up quite nice for the majority of us. I'm happy as are plenty of others, not really to bothered if a "budget pc" would wreck my console or if it wouldn't. I have an older PC ([email protected], 8gig Ram, 680GTX) that still runs things reasonably well although getting a bit long in the tooth and i'll be upgrading when i feel the need to for games that i don't want to play on console or games that are not available on it.

Not the core console, but there has been fairly persistent speculation that the PSVR will have some form of additional processing "box" which I can believe as the technical requirements for a convincing and nausea-free experience are quite high unless GFX are really dumbed down.

I think the box does interpolation of frames to the headset so 60htz becomes 120htz from what i have read.

I do not see them doing it due to fragmentation problems it would cause. They do change parts inside but this does not change how the systems works, or the "power" od the system.

No it isn't.

As a programmer I can say without hesitation that this just plain wrong.

Developing for PCs is hard not because the programming itself is hard but because you need to test your programs on multiple systems with hundreds of different configurations.

Lets just look at some of the different configurations you need to test against.

Windows 7/AMD CPU/AMD GPU
Windows 7/AMD CPU/Nvidia GPU
Windows 7/AMD CPU/Intel GPU
Windows 7/Intel CPU/AMD GPU
Windows 7/Intel CPU/Nvidia GPU
Windows 7/Intel CPU/Intel GPU

Windows 8/AMD CPU/AMD GPU
Windows 8/AMD CPU/Nvidia GPU
Windows 8/AMD CPU/Intel GPU
Windows 8/Intel CPU/AMD GPU
Windows 8/Intel CPU/Nvidia GPU
Windows 8/Intel CPU/Intel GPU

Windows 10/AMD CPU/AMD GPU
Windows 10/AMD CPU/Nvidia GPU
Windows 10/AMD CPU/Intel GPU
Windows 10/Intel CPU/AMD GPU
Windows 10/Intel CPU/Nvidia GPU
Windows 10/Intel CPU/Intel GPU

then when you are testing AMD GPUs or Nvidia GPUs you need to test against all the different models that they currently sell or have sold in the past. You also need to test against different driver versions as well.

In the end you are looking at hundreds possibly thousands of different configurations you need to test against.

So yes developing for the PC is harder than developing for consoles.

^ this I take it is also why console games seem to get better looking/performing over the years as developers learn the hardware and how best to use it. Where on pc that can't really happen. Pc performance tactics are practically just good old brute force.

You must be doing something wrong.

Not really, been a PC gamer since the late 90's and built several for myself and friends. Based on bang for buck the difference is not big enough and ultimately games are developed with consoles in mind. The past year has been a massive pain for new releases on PC with games being unplayable in some cases on release. At this moment in time the PS4 and X1 suit my needs more, most games look great and run smoothly. I can have a beer rather than checking what drivers everybody is using to get something to actually play. Yes the games are cheaper but on console I can nail the SP of a game and then trade it in, using this I don't feel I'm spending much more. Also everybody references steam sales, I must have about 200 games on Steam that I've never played! PSN and Xbox store have some way to catch up here and offer better deals but they are restricted to a back cataloge of 2 years where as PC its insanely massive.
