** POTENTIALLY THE BEST GAMING MONITORS YET!! ** Acer 34" Ultra-wides

Just buy it joe :)
I pulled the trigger after you convinced me curved widescreen gaming was the way forward :p

Heh I can't afford it straight away, going to have to sell my U3415W and use the money to buy the X34 - I'll wait a couple of weeks after the 9th I guess!

You don't really mean that. :D

I kinda do. The Acer X34 (at least its spec) seems to be the perfect balance of everything for me in a monitor - It's my favourite aspect ratio, my favourite size, my favourite pixel density, and 100Hz as well as G-Sync which are two technologies I have heard nothing but good things about.

Yeh, 100Hz without any problems at all.
Was my first time at a higher refresh rate then 60Hz and i must say i was impressed.

Yeh, exept for some coil whine when showing any white on the screen and the firmware issue i think i had a good panel indeed.

Coil whine on a monitor? I hope this isn't a constant issue... Yet another reason I'm going to wait.

What!

They are charging £1K (+/- a few quid) for a monitor and we should be grateful they they are fixing an issue on the field that should have never been got past QA.

LOL, yeah those damn customers and their unreasonable demands! :D

HEADRAT

Lol get a grip. You'd rather they had released it a couple of weeks earlier with the defect? Yeah it shouldn't have happened but it did and for all intents and purposes it was caught before it was released. All it's done is delay the launch a bit. My point was people should be grateful it was caught before stock arrived and people don't have to Pfaff around with returns and updates

Erm but it had been released, just not in the UK. Anyway I think we'll have to "agree to disagree" on that one. Let's just see how it comes out in the wash.

Hopefully I'll be very wrong and these units will be "tip top" with very few problems, it's just not a very auspicious start!

I'm not really sure the "get a grip" comment was required but hey your da Don ;)

but its an Acer.

Yup, but I'm also not paying £250 for an Asus. Risk it for a biscuit :p

As for the monitor being delayed, I'd rather Acer delay the release just so a lot of (r)etailers don't have to faff about with RMAs and helping people fix the issue themselves. If yours does have a problem it will more than likely be seen to a lot faster than it would if the blue band issue existed on all UK units.

Whoa, let's not get ahead of ourselves. Given a basic QC check would have picked up the banding issue before these even left the factory, it doesn't exactly bode well for panels with other issues such as excessive BLB and dust/dirt/insects behind the screen, and the chance they will slip through the apparently non-existent safety net that exists in the fantasy world of the Acer QA department... just as happened with their XB270HU... so this monitor is hardly out of the woods yet. If anything, the blue banding issue only further illustrates how inept Acer actually are! Only time will tell if this monitor is one to buy or avoid...

Come to think of it where in the world is Acer QA as its definitely not in the UK.

I thought that's what the current experiments at the Hadron Collider at CERN were hoping to discover, somewhere in the one of the hidden unknown dimensions beyond all current scientific understanding.

Lol! Higgs Boson / Acer QA department both massive discoveries which will land Nobel prizes... which will come 1st?

Maybe Acer QA are IN the Hadron Collider.... would explain the 'banding' issue.... sorry.

Ignoring all the brand bashing, i'm quite tempted to order one of these. I've been on a BenQ XL2420T since they come out and really want to see what the G-Sync fuss is all about. Extra real estate and higher resolution are quite appealing, i'll quite happily accept running a lower refresh rate.

At the moment on GPU duties i've got a pair of 780Ti KPE's running around 1350/1850 on water with no overvolt. I don't plan on changing them out till Pascal comes on the go but do have reservations about being limited to 3GB VRAM for running 3440x1440.

What GPU setup are you guys running successfully at this res? Will the 780's tide me over till Pascal appears on the scene or would a switch to AMD for now be preferable and wait for 2nd series of Pascal?

Games played at the moment are BF4, EOS, Elite, DAI, Total War series.

Ignoring all the brand bashing...

You shouldn't. Acer get bashed for very good reason and it should be something you take in to account when making a purchase. They are not being unfairly picked on.

As to your situation, you probably won't notice much, if any, of a difference with the refresh rate drop from your current monitor... is the XL2420T 120Hz? So nothing really. These things do tend to be subjective for the most part, but the majority of people who try G-Sync find it hard to game without it afterwards, so I think you may be pleasantly surprised there.

I don't know why you'd switch to AMD and buy this monitor?? G-Sync won't function. Your 780's should do a decent job and G-Sync will certainly help you when they struggle.

I'm using a 980Ti and I have seen my VRAM usage hit 4-5gb before.

As for framerates, mine handles fine, however I can't see myself hitting 100 FPS in games at this resolution on a single card - But with Pascal around the corner, I am not too worried.

As far as the bashing goes it seems to go for both main brands. Obviously there's a few unhappy people with recent monitors but i'm crossing fingers most of the faults have been addressed. At the end of the day pretty much every component in the system has a chance of fault and monitors are no different. As long as RMA stands it's not too much of an issue for me tbh.

144hz on the BenQ which the Ti's handle no problem with all the flashy stuff enabled. Although there isn't too much perceivable difference between 144 and 120 for me.

Monitors also available with free sync. Not read too much into DX12 yet but skimmed through a thread on another forum which seemed to get very deep into the technical side of life and seemed to favour current AMD outlasting NV when DX12 appears. Seemed to be a lot of disgruntled 980 owners after DX12 details released but can't remember what the main reason was. Either way both red and green camps will/should release pascal next year but if DX12 will heavily favour AMD then i'd happily switch to AMD now and wait for Pascal second release / updated GPU's.

Changing to 3440x1440 from what i can gather may be too challenging for the 3gb vram of the 780's, i don't want to go to single 980ti and need to look into xfire support for the games i play. The extra vram might be worth the swap.

As Varkanoid suggested, i'll go ask in the GPU section and see what others are running for this res with all bells/whistles.

Yeah, i'd rather take the hit in frame rate and have enough vram. Frame rate can be sorted when Pascal shows up. :)
