Power Tools & General Tools Recommendations & Advice

Thanks but if I'm thinking whether to justify spending 200 I ain't going to be considering spending nearly 500.
Cheapest option would be a thermal camera module to hook up to a raspberry pi or Arduino etc (but unless you already have a pi then there's the cost of that)

Those are depressingly low resolution though, 8x8 at 10Hz. The mobile Flir was bad enough really!

Yep wouldn't be a great option, but it's the cheapest option I know of.

There are better sensors (80x62) available but they obviously cost a lot more

Fair enough, my man-tool-logic is a little different from yours :D. I can't justify £200 on something of limited functionality and bound to be obsolete in a few years but I can justify £500 on something that is functionally better and will last a lot longer.

Maybe that last sentence should have been put in the graphics card subforum :D.

I have the Topdon TC001, currently available for just over £200 on Amazon. Resolution is better than the Flir equivalent. There is also a Hikmicro, same resolution but £169.

I have just come across these in a box and at first didn't know what they were but after googling they seem to be some of the first hex holders.
These are Dewalt and as you can see one is for pilot holes and the other took the bit.
They do come up on Dewalt but no prices so think they have been obsolete for a number of year's - Been trying to clean them with those cleaning wipes. They were yellow originally but do not look as bad as picture shows.

They look very well used, but the pilot hole drill bit still looks sharp.

bought myself a milwaukee 12 ah high output battery on a black friday sale to add to my 8 ah HO battery. They are damn expensive.
It mainly for the chainsaw I bought earlier this year, although I'm also thinking of buying the quik-lok gardening tools (strimmer, hedge cutter, etc.) and it will be good for those too.

They still make them. They are called flip drives. The idea is that you have one bit that has a drill on one end and a driver on the other. When you go from drilling to driving you just flip the bit. They are expensive. About £25 each. Very handy if you are doing the same thing again and again and again..

Yes, I've been considering a large capacity battery for my garden tools, but they are so darned expensive!

I saw a demo of the PowerStack batteries yesterday.

I want.

The increase in power output for your average power tool was simply amazing.

The problem is that the damn things are so expensive. It's really difficult to justify the cost.

I'm tempted in to buying a new router just because it happens to come with two of them, lol.

Great man maths :D

Talking about DeWalt, I have noticed a large influx of fakes on ebay. I've reported a number of them, but ebay refuse to take any action. I think ebay are shooting themselves in the foot, though, becuase if you can't trust ebay then you can't really trust any of their products, even from sellers who you thought were respectable.

There’s a lot of 512 wrench’s for half price too on eBay. Fake ?

I don't know what they are. Suspect, I think the answer is!

Problem with these things is you need to research them. Some of the Fluke items, for example, are genuine Fluke. They are sold in China at hugely discounted prices, then sold back to the world by opportunistic Chinese gentlemen. They are an absolute bargain. But, there is no reason to suppose that all Chinese cheap goods are like that.

One that is all over ebay at the moment is the DCD805.

The Chinese version is sold as a dewalt at about £65.

The real one is £100 and you can see there are visual differences

But the really suspect thing is that the same Chinese drill is also sold on ebay, without the DeWalt sticker, for £27

Meaning that whatever it is, it's ridiculously cheap and even at £65 you are getting ripped off.

As I said before, I have reported these things to ebay and they sent an email back saying they didn't see a problem. Meaning they don't care as long as they are making money.

Nope. I think the lesson here is that ebay is not a good place to buy tools any more, unless they are new and from a reputable dealer.

The high output batteries do make a difference. I was surprised at how much. I saw a demo the other day for the DeWalt PowerStack and by the end of the demo knew that I was going to buy some, lol. But, yes, they are horribly expensive. Should last longer than me lol. Bought two. Then I bought a router to go with them. And a new drill. Oh God. Please shoot me.

Went to use my Bosch blue drill driver this week and the 18v battery was proper dead. Could not even get a LED illuminated on the charge level test function and battery would not charge. Was about to bite the bullet and buy a new one but fortunately did some Googling and found out about jumping the battery!

Connected it directly to one of my DeWalt 18v batteries which had charge (+ to +, - to -) and was able to do a charge level test on the busted Bosch! Disconnected after 15 seconds and then put in charger, started charging immediately and has been successfully resurrected!
