Power Tools & General Tools Recommendations & Advice

I have an Evo Sliding Miter Saw from the eBay outlet, intended a little adjustment to get perfectly straight cuts but for £45 it was an amazing purchase!

My corded drill gave up the ghost earlier whilst using a holesaw in ply, the magic smoke escaped:(

Does anyone have a recommendation for a good DIY level corded drill for under £100?

We've got a pair of reasonable cordless drills (albeit older Makita Nicad models), and an SDS+ drill, but need something that is inbetween in terms of power/use.

I got this one recently for a little over £100. i went for the 1000W one as I'll be drilling into brick a fair bit with it. I'm very happy with it.
Since you already have an SDS+ drill, you would probably be fine with the 750W model for less than £70.

Keep an eye on the bay as Evolution have their own account on there which sells B grade returns for £63.

I bought one and it was immaculate.

Was about to post that exact same link :p

I bought one of those a few weeks ago for the same purpose and it's great!

I read a review on Amazon saying that it doesn't cut accurate mitres. How have you found yours?

Mine is spot on, after spending an hour trying to do a single straight cut with a ***** manual mitre saw, I decided to pop out and grab a "proper" tool, managed to do the rest of the (awkward shaped including a bay window and alcoves) room within 2 hours :p

I'm now looking at the Bosch GBH 2-24 D Professional SDS Hammer Drill 240V

It's 2.9kg in weight, 240v, 790W motor / 2.7J of inpact energy.

£99

I bought this with some long sds drill bits and just tested it.

Wow, it went right through with little effort, well worth the money!

Just moved into a new house, the walls are basically made of small rocks and stones underneath plasterboard. It's been extremely difficult to drills holes with my £20 Homebase drill, I did get a new masonry bit which helped, but getting a straight hole is so difficult as I'm really just vibrating all the rocks until they fall out, and then I have a huge mess instead of a hole to put my plug in.

Is it possible to get a straight hole in this kind of material? The rocks just seem to fall out from above the hole.

Hmm you probably want a masonry cutter rather than a drill.

If they're stacked and not cemented in place then you will need to cement that..

It'll be very hard to get a hole in this type of material. Its called no fines concrete, so its basically just large pebbles held together by cement with no fine aggregates added. When I used to fit windows we just had to buy some extra long bolts and drill in a lot further in the hope of getting a fix. Then used expanding foam to do the rest.

You could try using a resin fixing product for heavier duty fixings and plasterboard fixings for the smaller stuff.

Needed something solid to put my new saw on - The workmate seemed fine till pulled on saw handle and saw tipped forward.-

Sat and thunk - Got it - drill holes to match feet in workmate when fully out - drop coach bolt through holes and tighten up workmate - solved.

I got myself a mitre saw stand on ebay for about £45 andit's brilliant, both ends extend out which allows you to cut long pieces easily and they can also work as stops to give you consistent lengths for multiple cuts etc. I've used it several times and it's worth every penny!!

Saw this on HUKD and thought it might be of interest to some - seems a decent price. Missing a 7mm masonry bit though, like all these sets seem to be :s
