Power Tools & General Tools Recommendations & Advice

Can you get cheap cordless electric screwdrivers with the ability to drive very very slowly, ideally with the speed limited?

I have a hand grinder for coffee beans, and the handle slots onto a standard hex driver nub on the the main body of the grinder so that a standard hex driver fits perfectly.

I need something with a relatively decent amount of torque and I have a £10 Mac Alister driver from B&Q which works okay if a little *vigorously*. If it was just a bit slower it really would be ideal.

I have a 4v battery Worx screwdriver I picked up from Homebase for £10 - it is very slow turning - just looked and seems they have gone up quite a bit or I did get it really cheap.

Thanks. I have something similar from B&Q. Ours both have approx 220rpm. I agree that it feels slow putting in screws, but attached to a coffee grinder this feels a bit more vigorous. I was hoping for even slower, but actually I think 220'll be fine.

Just checked online and my Worx is 230 rpm - it seems much slower than that though.
Likewise! But as I say, despite my initial concerns, I think the grinder should be able to handle that.

I'm contemplating getting a decent clamp and scale to put together a proper Heath Robinson affair!

A steamer isn't even required if it's just wallpaper.

For me having just stripped an entire house top to bottom.

1. Score the wallpaper, don't buy a paper tiger as they're expensive and mine broke 70% through a gutting. Instead get a rolling perforator.

2. Buy zinser dif, use hot water. Spray on and soak the wall after perforating, leave for a bit and then give another light spray.

3. Get a proper scraper as listed above, it is a lifesaver, and makes stripping the walls a breeze. On top of this it won't dig into walls and cause replastering or excessive touch ups.

A steamer you risk blowing the plaster, and if you're dealing with vinyl wallpaper, a steamer won't help at all.

Gotta say thanks again for this advice. It's still a time consuming process but a lot less labour intensive than I expected (in most parts anyway, some were still tough to get off...)

Welcome!

Looks good but plaster needs a bit of love. How far into Wales are you? I'm in Bristol and can recommend a good plasterer... Charged me 380 for 15sqm room and ceiling.

North Wales :p I have a few clients who are plasterers so shouldn't be a problem getting it done for a fair price

Not sure they've ever sold them before, but Aldi are listing a bench drill for £60.

I've been wanting to make a couple of shoe-racks where accurate vertical drilling into wood would be essential (https://woodworking.formeremortals.net/2015/01/make-shoe-rack/). I figure I could make a jig out of scrap wood to position the wood for drilling the dowel hole but then need repeated up/down drilling to be spot-on. I'd guess they come out of the same factor in China as the models Screwfix or Machine Mart have for around £60 - any thoughts on the quality for some light use?

Or

https://www.screwfix.com/p/record-power-ds19-compact-drill-stand/4092f - a stand which I have a spare corded drill I could stick in it.

Not sure but i think i'd be more tempted by the Screwfix one just because of the ease of returns. The Aldi one has an extra 2yr warranty but not sure what they're like?

On a slightly different note, i wonder what that Aldi stud detector is like. It looks ok for the price. Better than a lot of the cheaper ones anyway.

I've had no problems with my Lidl (Parkside) corded drill over the last few years. Soon to test my Aldi wall sander and cordless drill :p
I have an Aldi 4" angle grinder which is 10 year old and never had any issues with it, it's even on the original brushes and it's been abused!
Bought a Parkside 15kg breaker the other week, switch went within a couple of hours and the replacement the hammer action broke after a few uses, Lidl were pretty good though with refunds so not completely put off buying from just maybe no0t their "heavy duty" stuff.

Costco have a Makita 4.0 ah 18v combi drill plus battery and charger for £130. Is this a good deal. The model is DHP456 anniversary. I think it might have been superceded now but seems like a pretty good price.

I know it's not exactly a powertool, but thought some of you might be into more than that.
Has anyone else copied glowforge laser cutter ease of use but made a cheaper version.

Whilst doing exactly what Glaucus has above. This isn't a power tool but it fits here.

Spirit Levels!

I have a 2ft box level and a 6" torpedo level. I'd really like a 4ft and 6ft level. Screwfix do this set for £35 which is often on sale down from £45.

I know for shelves etc those kind of tolerances are fine. But if i was building an 8 metre outbuilding, would it be accurate enough or is it worth spending a small fortune on something like a Stabilia/Dewalt?

I got mine from B&Q but did pick up the most expensive one on shelf - put it along one of the shelves and surprisingly it was dead level (Shelf that is) - I then put a cheaper one on top of expensive one until found one that matched level wise.

I think with levels it really is you get what you pay for. Mine are Stabilia but cheap end.

I found a mates Bosch laser level very good for distance - this is level with red beam in end.
