It doesn't actually say, but does say Idstein Germany on the side, but so does my new drill, along with made in China. Just looked at the date code and it is from 2010 and still going strong after daily use.

The chuck from the old drill was made in Germany as it is made by Rohm, but the new chuck they have started using is probably China made cheapo one.

Thanks DXP55, I will give that a try if I manage to get hold of a decent chuck for the right price.

Can't really fault German tools in general for quality can you, they're just superb. I knew the 796 was put together in China as with my 996, it's why I asked about your old drill. Quality cutting by Dewalt maybe. Touch wood (no pun intended) that mine doesn't inherit this same issue. Maybe it's chluck of the draw with whatever batch you get from.
 
Are there any good options for a budet router? Ive got a tiny job that I need to do (channel cut the length of a piece of wood) but no one I know owns one. Is it worth waiting for a Aldi/Lidl deal to crop up or is there something else to consider? Thanks
 
You'd be better with one with a hammer function which takes you up to £70 (below). The £50 one would do the job but it would take ages and be a hassle.

If you can afford to spend a little extra id be more tempted by this and a couple of masonry drill bits (you'll likely only really need a 5mm, 6mm and 8mm for most things)

Didn't have a budget, just don't see the point spending money on something like Makita or DeWalt for how little use it will get. :)
 
I agree, and for 90% of the jobs you have, something like the above will be absolutely fine.

If you do think that you might be interested in doing more in the future then my preference would be to buy from a brand who do a range of tools, this way you can pick up additional tools cheaply because you can pick up "bare" tools which means you're not having to re-buy batteries and chargers each time.

So something like this Ryobi will then allow you to pick up other tools from the range quite cheaply. They do a cordless sander for £35 for example which would always come in handy. You can then use the battery from the drill to power it.

Alternatively, the tools from Aldi/Lidl are always good value. Aldi seem to have changed from "Workzone" to "Ferrex" recently which is a little confusing. Lidl use a brand called "Parkside", i have a few of their cordless tools and they're fairly decent and have a good range.
 
Definitely recommend picking a brand and platform if you are getting/planning to get more tools and use them as an enthusiastic DIYer.

I'm on 2 platforms at the moment Bosch Blue 18v and DeWalt XR 18v. Combi Drill in Bosch Blue and Impact Driver in DeWalt (The bosch did not get favourable reviews). Then have various other tools between the 2 brands.

One 4ah battery for each and no issues at all. Granted they are not budget tools but you get your moneys worth if you are running them frequently.

The annoying thing about that set of bits (I have it) is that they don't come with a 7mm masonry bit for brown plugs which is pretty naff. 7mm is a pretty common size.

It also dosn't come with 3mm wood bit which is pretty useful if you need to do pilot holes, that said 3mm bits to bend/break very easily so you may be better just getting a pack of them.

I think for £149 that's worth going the extra distance for, do you know if the DeWalt 4/5ah batteries are interchangeable between all DeWalt drills?

AFAIK anything XR banded is cross compatible.

The only downside to the twin pack is the small batteries, but tbh, they charge in an hour or so and shouldnt be a problem for DIY use.

As above, you might be well advised to get a 7mm masonry bit. If getting an impact driver, you'll want some impact bits too. A box of PZ2 probably - I prefer the 50mm long impact bits as I feel they fit better, but that's just my preference.

I've never had an issue with small bits as I was give a load of small random drill bits, so I have boxes of small drills for pilot holes lol. Never give them much thought tbh, but they are used quite regularly actually!

Bought an adaptor that slots onto a 1/2" shank of a grinder so I can use it as a polisher. Also the pigtail can be quickly removed via a grub screw to use it in a drill, which is really handy. Just need to bolt it down to my bench now as it's a little heavy on the left with the big 200mm whetstone and tips over.
 
Ended up buying the DeWalt duo kit, the DeWalt 100 piece drill set and the DeWalt PZ2 kit with magnetic bit holder.

Went from only spending maybe £50 to £181. :p

Tonight I went to buy a Dewalt impact driver but then spotted a deal on toolstation for a combi drill with 2 4ah batteries. So I bought that (I don't really need a drill) and then bought the impact driver body only from amazon.

147 quid became 227 or so. Eek.
