Practically given up

LOL. Welcome to overclockers forums.

I would not listen to those who say 'should have bought nvidia'. The only problem i have had in a long time is that Battlefield 3 sometimes does not start first time but that is a problem with the game rather than my AMD graphics card. Plenty of people have trouble with nvidia and there drivers. You are better finding out the problem and fixing it rather than swapping graphics cards as all you will probably get is a new set of problems.

I completely agree. You'll get people who will be having problems with their computer and some one like AWPC or Arknor will come along and go "herpity derp, should have gone nVidia, you never get problems with them", person listens to them and goes out to buy an nVidia graphics card. For the people whose problems go away, they end up becoming jaded and think nVidia can do no wrong but everyone involved there completely ignores the fact that a major part of the system has changed, and the same thing often happens with people having problems with nVidia graphics cards, they get an AMD one and the problem goes away. It doesn't mean it's the fault of the brand of graphics card, there's far more to computers than that and people who utter things like that, you shouldn't listen to at all because they don't really want to help you they just basically want to indoctrinate you into their idiotic little belief system of how nVidia never has any problems, ever. The same does happen with AMD, but for some reason there's far more people who do it over nVidia than AMD *shrug*.

I would just re-install windows - install motherboard - graphics - sound card - network drivers (make sure that ALL these are all the latest version from the manufacturers website). Then, update windows and install ant-virus/firewall. Re-install your programs and games (make sure your games are updated with latest patches). Sometimes certain components of a PC will not like working with other components so they can fix issues by releaseing updated drivers for sound cards and other components.

This will be the main issue really, it doesn't seem like the PC has been set up properly.

Your games should run fine on medium settings with a 6870

I reckon he'll get more than medium out of most games.

maybe an SLI rig was a bit of an exaggeration

But You can't expect to max out AAA titles at 1920 x 1080 with hardware like the 6870.

For reference i'm referring to running everything on ULTRA with AA / AF on top at 1920 x 1080, which is what i think the OP may be trying to achieve.

SLI was a huge exaggeration. As I pointed out I'm playing Skyrim on Ultra settings at 6048x1200 with a Q6600 and a 5870.

It is not much different from my 6950 and I can assure you running bf3 on ultra and skyrim is not an issue for me at all on that card. Granted in the future I will need another 6950 or maybe something totally different, but right now nothing is an issue for my "mid range cheap rubbish rig" :)

I think sometimes people try to justify spending over 1k, when it is not needed.

Not merely "running the game"

If your willing to run without high AA / AF and knock the detail down to medium on some settings, obviously older cards are going to be fine. But the OP makes no mention of trying this ?

You're right and I didn't take that into account.

Back again, i turn AA Off in every game, i dont see the point in it.

And no i dont max games, i can max Deus Ex just fine but i dont max other games with AA when not needed, only when i know i can get 60+ fps constnatly over, so i do benchmarks and tweakings

Don't get why you get all the problems, i use a 2500k n a 6870 and i have had no problems at all running anything, everything looks lovely and clean and no tearing or lag. O.o

huh ? now im confused.

So what games can't you run then ? Example game with what settings / levels / AA etc.. you were trying to run and what average FPS were you getting ?

It isnt not being able to run games, its the problem with a few.

I'm saying, with vsync off if i play Deus ex or splinter cell im getting a solid 60fps but the props/environment seems a bit jumpy or unsmooth.

Conviction just feels off without vsync, i dont mind playing a few games that are single with vsync, an example being of multi is Battlefield 3, that game runs so well on my rig regardless of settings and everything feels great even with vsync on but i turn it off to get the best input i can, but some single player games i dont mind because they arent exactly twitch reflex, and even then i play bad ports (Skyrim etc) on a gamepad

Oh it runs fine, but there was so many problems with stutter, crashes, this that etc.

I got it all fixed, but it was ****ing terrible trying to do it.

wow every response includes a profanity albeit concealed; not sure why people have given you the light of day in this thread tbh.

so its not that anything doesnt actually run well, you just have some kind of wierd obsession with games feeling "off" without Vsync.

Right oh. * leaves *

Not trying to be rude now, but i am grateful you are leaving, you really arent any help to anyone.

I dont experience this problem with games like DNF, TF2, BF3, SR3 etc, only a few games for no given reason.

What refresh rate do you have, when playing with vsync disabled you want the highest rate possible to minimise tearing (preferably 120hz or above).

Basically, vsync off will always 'judder'. That's just how it will be. Try a frame limiter (dxtory) and see if it looks better for you. Try limiting it to either just under your refresh rate, or just above. See how that goes.

I managed to get Deus Ex to run with vsync and triple buffering on (ingame) with no mouselag, no idea how i did it but it worked.

I have a 60hz hp2311x and i did planon getting a 120hz monitor in the future.

Duke Nukem started to feel a bit juddery with vsync off, but i used triple buffering in D3Doverrider and that completely fixed tearing and mouse lag AND the judderyness

Not so much for splinter cell but thats ok to run on vsync no probs there.
