*** Pre-season Friendlies Thread ***

Player I've not been impressed with so far is Eccleston. Doesn't look even remotely good enough for Liverpool and at 21 his days must be numbered.

He's only travelled with the squad to make up the numbers. With Kuyt leaving, Bellamy and Suarez at the Olympics and Carroll & Borini only just returning from the Euros, he was the closest thing to a striker we had available.

Ah, I've only seen him play in these two preseason matches, but he strikes me as someone who would take well to Rodgers' system - very pacy, good dribbling and ball-control. Surely his end product can't be any worse than Scott Sinclair's? :D.

As I said, technically he's a very talented player and is certainly the type of player that would fit into how Rodgers wants to play however I'm not sure he's got a real cutting edge to his game.

He's not actually that quick and has a habit of over complicating things in the final third. He was really highly thought of a couple of years back but he's seemed to have stood still over the last couple of years.

I'd rather see him get a chance as a squad player than somebody like Cole but I'm not sure he'll ever hold down a first team spot.

[...]Given that we're going to be playing with 3 CM's then we can probably get away with having 6 CM's, especially if 2 of those are happy being bit part players and with the versatility of Gerrard & Henderson.
Most of those Liverpool CMs seem to have a neutral/attacking bias. Who of those 6 do you see playing the 'Leon Britton' role? Lucas?

It has to be someone comfortable with the notion of not being a playmaker - Britton had precisely zero assists all last season, despite the high passing stats.

Actually, I think I've just hit upon Rodgers' plan for Downing :D

MLS 3-2 Chelsea

A bit boring and a sloppy performance. MLS got an injury time deflection for the winner.

Manchester City v Arsenal

Pre-season Friendly, Beijing National Stadium

Friday, July 27, 2012, 13:00 (BST)

Live on ESPN HD.

That'll be interesting

Dunno if you want to add it to the OP Robbo but we play Hannover on the 11th :)

Anyone watching the City vs Arsenal game? Looks like Mancini has asked City to "persuade" the management to give him some money. Arsenal are killing them at the moment.

2-0. Acres of space on the right. Jenkinson, who has had a good half, completely missing. Great performace but losing to silly mistakes. Glad to have you back Arsenal. :)
