Yeah it's a rare case these days of me thinking a manager getting sacked has actually been given a few chances, had problem spells in the past etc and so it probably makes sense his time is up after another bad result.
Half the time I'm left wondering if it's really the right call (an interesting stat I heard yesterday was that unlike Potter, Tuchel never lost back-to-back league matches) but not hugely surprised at this one.

Seemed inevitable for awhile. That said he's seemingly had somewhat of a limited budget and the best players have been poached by bigger clubs.

This is a sacking that makes sense but at the same time it's hard to argue that Hasenhuttl hasn't done a decent job with Southampton. He's had them punching above their weight for a long time and been one of a very few teams that would regularly cause the biggest sides problems despite having a fairly average squad. That said, when things went bad they usually went very bad and they had those swings far too often and you can't keep recovering from those positions. Southampton probably need something new but Hasenhuttl shouldn't have too much problem finding himself another decent job.

I like Hassenhuttl, the league is very strong these days and it doesn't feel like Southampton have particularly spent much (I may be wrong, haven't checked).

Hassenhuttl will do better in a team that can successfully buy him the players for the system and positions he wants. Southampton have been spending but I don't think they've been able to truly get the targets that he wanted or the type of players.

We've gone through spells playing some of our players bizarrely out of position because he wants to stick steadfastly to his system despite not always having the squad for it. That's his major weakness. He seems to have one style and will not deviate from it unless absolutely forced to do so.

Since he's been with us though, we've spent a fairly significant amount of money most seasons, including the start of this season on players that theoretically should suit his system and style. So you'd hope to see a bit of improvement or at least consistency?

However the results are on a steady decline -

18/19 - 1.25ppg, 16th (half season from Mark Hughes)
19/20 - 1.36ppg, 11th
20/21 - 1.13ppg, 15th
21/22 - 1.05ppg, 15th
22/23 - 0.85ppg, 18th (so far)

He has these great winning streaks (like last winter, 1 loss in 10 against half decent teams) and you get a renewed hope we'll suddenly be on a surge to the European places and then it just vanishes.

The following that we've won FOUR league games since February 2022.

In those terms, I think he's long since used up any good will he had - not many other managers would have survived that sort of lack of performance for so long.

Haven't the majority of signings been young players though?

Quite a few but that's arguably his influence - he wants young up and coming players. That was part of the reason his original appointment made sense - he wanted to work with the sort of teams Southampton were financially able to assemble.

...looks like we're after Nathan Jones from Luton as the Hassenhuttl replacement.

Not awe inspiring.

Hopefully i'm wrong but it feels like a bit of a gamble and perhaps one gamble too far for us.

What happened to Southampton's youth? They had one of the best academies in the country if not Europe and were the poster child of how to run a football club the right way. They were the English version of Ajax/Dortmund. I can understand the sacking but going for a manager from Luton Town seems below their standards.

What happened to Southampton's youth?

The sort of youth players who used to be attracted to teams like Southampton because they might get in the first team now go to academies like Chelsea because they know they'll probably get loaned out to a team like Southampton if they're at that level anyway and in the mean time they'll probably get paid more.

Forest fan here.

The City Ground adores Cooper, he has a LOT of patience in the bank, we could go down and still do not think the City Ground would turn on him and I think the owner knows if he gets rid of Cooper, it would cause an almight stink.

We are fighting and even Lingard the last few games has shown something I have not seen from him all season.

My big concern is who would be stupid enough to take the job.
