And how does that compare to what Newcastle have spent? Your net spend over the last few years is almost nothing, that doesn't seem to be in the same realms of ambition or investing.
We're €60m behind Newcastle in the last 5 years in terms of net spend having played in the Prem for less than 4 of them. That's also including City spending an absurd £100m on Grealish.
Their net spend the season before was basically zero.
Almost like we sold a player for £100m and had FFP to worry about after having a net spend of about £200m the two years prior...

Why 5 years? We're comparing the ambition of owners why are you taking into account multiple years before Newcastle were taken over

As I said, if Villa spend more than Newcastle over the next 5 years or so and turn them into a European qualifier then we can say you were right but I'd be surprised :)

Because it's significantly more relevant to the discussion than basing our ambition by just looking at the net spend in the summer we sold a player for £100m hand had to worry about FFP after spending £200m net the years prior. We're the 6th highest spenders in the league since we came back up, behind only the traditional top 6 minus Liverpool. There's also been significant investment into our youth and academy setups as well as plans to expand the stadium.

Newcastle have ridiculous spending power currently because Ashley was a tight arse. Barring any completely legal saudi sponsorships they'll start having to worry about their spending too soon enough. Comparing ambition based on the last 10 months of spending is asinine.

Interesting how the two favourites in the early weeks of last season (Arteta and to a lesser extent Vieira) have seen quite a few managers leave their posts yet are still hanging around. Looking at the cohort from the start of last season, only 6 other managers remain in their jobs (Pep, Klopp, Frank, Rogers, Moyes, Hasselhuttl) and some clubs have changed managers multiple times!

I suppose of those remaining, Pep and Klopp were always going to be safe (interesting to see how things develop at Liverpool mind - I don't think it's beyond the realms of possibility he could do a Keegan and choose to walk at some point). Moyes had a strong season with West Ham and Frank certainly didn't disgrace himself. That then leaves Hasselhuttl who seems to be able to brush off heavy defeats and do 'enough' to keep his head about water at Saints, and Rogers who honestly I thought was a dead man walking at the start of the season. I mean imagine they lose to Wolves today, they'd remain bottom of the league, why isn't this guy getting sacked? Stuff it, I've just put a bet on him being next to leave.

An interesting subplot this season will be the World Cup, I wonder if clubs might use that natural break in the club season to make some changes, giving the new manager a bit of time to work with the players before Boxing Day.

Good ebening :D
He's not a bad appointment for them to be honest. His time at Arsenal is tricky to judge as a bit like Moyes at United he was the man following THE man, they did ok season one but slipped a bit in his second season and he was soon binned off. But his record in Spain I don't think can be argued with.

Worth another go in the prem at least.

Going from Slippy G to Unai is a monumental upgrade for Villa though.

This. Gerrard has been our first manager in a long time where I've genuinely felt the sooner we got rid of him the better. Was all up for giving him a chance and was as excited as any fan to see what he could achieve with us, but this season has been woeful, some of the worst football I've ever seen us play. Boring, sloppy and completely unworthy of the PL. No solid starting 11 for games at a time even taking into account injuries, the whole Mings scenrio, over reliance on players like Matty Cash to carry games, a reluctance to play more dynamic football as games went against us. Dull.

Relatively speaking I'm against the trend of disposable managers these days, hell I was one of the few who really wanted Smith to stay. But Gerrard proved he was unable to do the job over and over again, even when we where able to pull a surprising performance out of the bag it seemed more a result of the opposing teams form as apposed to our ability under him.

Sundays match may well have been one of those fluke games where a team that's underperformed finds a certain spark for 90 minutes and 90 minutes only, but I don't think so. We where a different team and dominated Brentford as though we where channeling one of the top 6 on their best days.

Very excited to see what we can do under Emery.

Good post. I said a few pages back it was clear the team weren't playing for him and wanted him out too. Someone disagreed then they went and thumped Brentford. I only watched the highlights but that 4th goal I think it was the players were busting a gut going forward in stark contrast to how they've been previously. You'll not get a result this weekend though ;)

Got to the point where I don't think this news will disappoint many fans if it's true - he's had a few good runs but there is no consistency (at least in terms of results, he consistently employs bizarre tactics and lineups). Sports Republic ownership is also starting to get a bit of criticism in some areas of the fanbase for lack of leadership, as the way the club is being run is not perceived to be particularly good. Losing Joe Shields to Chelsea a few months after he signed for us was seen as a bit of an indicator of 'unrest' within the club. Probably hopes were a bit too high for positive change off the back of anonymous/absent Chinese businessman ownership.
