Preparing for Fatherhood

My wife is 25 weeks pregnant and we have so much stuff now it's unfunny!

The travel system takes up a lot of space. Its the Armadillo Flip XT from Mamas and Papas and comes with literally everything. Not going to lie... it cost a small fortune!

We've also got Sterilisers and bottle prep machines (both Tommee Tippee).

The expense asside... I cant wait for the little ones arrival :)

Congrats!

My brain must be wired wrong because all babies look the same to me and each time I see one it reminds me of how I need to avoid having any! :D

You're not weird, this is common for men but I work with 3 women who all think the same.
I'm exactly the opposite, I see a baby and I go all gooey and I can't wait for grandchildren.

I am the same, they either look like jacket potatoes or aliens to me.

I cant comprehend the gooey reaction but i suppose its the better more natural reaction for people to have.

Just another tip for when they get a little older, scented nappy bags.

They are amazing for car journeys as sick bags. Hold it all in, don't leak, and you can't smell through them :D

They didn't sell them 25+ years ago :(
My youngest had a habit of doing an Exorcist about 1/2 mile from our destination even though we'd keeping asking her if she was OK - then wham.

Just cleaned up the weirdest poop. Was like a chicken kebab shape. All the poo just pushed into each other. Poor kid hadn't pooed for 2 days so this must have been plugging him up. Water and prune puree is the answer for that haha

Thanks for all the posts, building up knowledge as the weeks pass....

...its already been a rollercoaster, 20 week scan was supposed to be Tuesday, we were told on the last meeting it was 10.30am, never thought about looking at the letter that was given to us at the same time....9.40am tuesday we decided to have a look....9.30am....arrived at the hospital at 10am to be told youre late....no **** sherlock...lets just say, its been rescheduled for monday next week....great start.

...Going to the NEC Baby Show this weekend....anyone experienced these shows? Are the discounts really that good, as ive checked a few email offers so far and the pricing is the same as in the shops....one Breastfeeding starter kit was actually £40 in Argos compared to £43 at the show....im bordering on the line "its not all great" with regards to the discounts they may offer....

....mainly looking for travel systems, so if i can get some decent discounts i cant in the shops i will purchase.

Advice as always, appreciated and i hope youre all going well on the fatherhood journey.

Breastfeeding starter kit that costs £40? Sounds like a gimmick. It's breast feeding. All you need is a pair of breasts?

Until it goes wrong. My wife had trouble.

- Being able to bottle breastmilk - good for night feeds and Dad bonding
- First child was then really fussy about which bottle he liked. Tried about 5 or 6 different types before settling.
- Nipple shields - stop hurty nipples (apparently) and will help slow the flow if it's shooting out (and it does).
- Muslins (milk can go everywhere)
- Perfect prep machine is great for when/if you get to formula

Yep issues here too. Our little one has a wonky mouth that is causing latching issues and a fiancee in tears. That is being corrected by some visits to an osteopath.

Breastfeeding can be a nightmare. My gf wasn't producing any colostrum after her cesarean so we had to give her formula, and by the time her let down reflex was going she wouldn't latch on no matter how many times we tried. In the end we've just done a combination of expressing and formula. Picked up an electric pump for 75 quid off Amazon and actually it has been worth it. Manual pumping took forever to get a decent amount whereas she can sit back and watch TV while the machine does it all for her. Bit steep, but I wanted to make sure our girl got proper breast milk and the manual pump was hurting her.

So yeah, it's not as simple as just sticking a baby on a boob and expecting it all to be straightforward. It can be very frustrating when you're exhausted!

So a nice little update....had the 20 week scan yesterday...all is well, didnt find out the sex as we want it to be a surprise :-)

NEC Show was good, served the purpose...we had a budget, which we slightly exceeded but i found we saved around £200-250 on retail price (well i know that we should never really pay retail price)....

...Few things that stood out for me, it wasnt a big show tbh, ive heard the London ones are bigger.
Babies R Us are a good tool for negotiation, against Mothercare who we managed to get to price match for most of the products and even ones that Babies R Us didnt sell..
Mothercare were offering 10% off and Babies R Us were offering 20%

So what did we get....

Oyster 2 Pram, Carry Cot, Hood Colour Pack, Adaptors, Pebble Plus and Isafe/isofix base, plus a nice Crib...oh and PoddlePod...all for £820 delivered.

Started off at peppermint.co.uk who i found were friendly and gave good advice and showed all the travel systems in one area, but way too expensive at £740 for everything listed above apart from a crib, poddlepod and it was a Pebble and isofix and not the updated versions ie Pebble Plus and Isafe.

Then we went to Mothercare who seemed reasonable, very friendly and we also knew in the back of our heads that they price matched.

Babies R us, although they dont seem as professional and their advice wasnt as good...as stated a great bargaining tool at any show and somehow they also sold MAM bottle sets for less than the actual MAM stands.

Without going into all the figures around a 20% saving overall, im happy with that and well worth the ticket prices..happy with the Oyster 2, its not top end, but its stylish, suits our needs and its what we both liked which is the main point...no arguing also which was great :-)

We also managed to pic up 6 free MAM feeding bottles....only parts next on the list are - Baby monitor, anyone have any experience? Mattress monitor and a few licks of paint for the new baby room...oh and my trusty vinyl cutter will be making some very customised wall decals...i run my side business via ebay and fb so im not sure if i can say the name but its all vinyl related products :-)

One happy father to be

Our baby boy is due on 1st September so got about 3.5months to go.

We found out in the 12 week scan that he has both legs missing below the knees and so we've had a lot of appointments with specialists looking at this.

Despite the issues, we've still been enjoying the pregnancy. We picked up a Bugaboo Cameleon along with a couple of extras (an expensive sleeping bag thing and a parasol). We still need to get a cot and a car seat (along with lots of smaller things).

First real laugh, First tooth, first time they crawl, first intended hug.... it's all amazing. Taught me a lot, made me a more patient and tolerant person.

Today I find out my son has hit all school objectives for the year with still half a term to go. Couldn't be more proud. If we can keep him out of trouble, he will have a bright future.

Good luck guys and girls.

Btw, you think you have little time now...just you wait. You'll see how precious time really is. Explains some of the insane school run driving we all witness.

Good luck to you guys who are at the prepping stage, and fair play Kingdom for not learning the sex. No way did I have that kind of patience. With regards to baby monitor, how big is your house? We picked up a cheapo Motorola unit off of Amazon and tbh it's pointless (just like everyone here said it would be). She's either a) asleep, b) awake and happy to chill, or c) crying. Only rarely do you hear her fussing a bit before hitting c. Your call, but I promise you that you won't get much use out of it in the first couple months since you'll probably have her with you 95% of the time. Moses basket ftw.

My little girl is asleep on my chest now and has started to give us some amazing smiles. Warning: smiles may cause heat damage to your heart.

I only find animals cute. I don't get why babies are cute at all.

I don't know if most of these posts are negative or positive! :p

Congratulations!

Years?!?!?!!?!

My son was sleeping through the night from about 6 months, if not less :D

Mine sleeps through has done for ages now but it's still not the same he wakes up at 6:30 most days with no concept of weekends so I'm still tired and so are most people I know just not the flat our exhausted sort that the early months brings!

A couple of workmates have mentioned that people don't appreciate the impact that sleep deprivation has on what was, up until childbirth, an easy-going and loving relationship!
