Prices make me sick!

Very true. I used to work in a high street electronics place, they used to buy in gold plated scart leads for ~50p each (admittedly bulk discount included) and sell them for £9.99

You think thats bad, you want to see the price clothes retails pay for your £50 shirts and £80 trainers.

I find that most people who scream "OMG [business name] is so expensive, it's so much cheaper online!" are the same people who don't quite understand how businesses are run.

I find the Blue high street electronics retailer is far better price wise than the Purple one... Usually about a third of the price!

Or pick a box out of a skip after some contractors are done, and order a bag of ends and a crimping tool. £30 for about all the cat5 you could ever want.
Yup. Skip diving 4TW ;) I found a load of copper cable in one - £55 from the scrappies for it for 2 hours work.
Just remember to ask permission from the person renting the skip though - CYA.

Reminds me of conversation I had at work a few weeks back with a colleague about doing some DIY where the same convenience/cost argument applied . He had a fair amount of painting to do at home and I asked him why he was doing it rather than getting someone else in. He told me that if he did the work (which would have taken a couple of weekends) he could save himself a few hundred pounds.

I then told him that instead of doing that he could work just the one weekend at our place on the overtime rates, and not only would he be able to pay someone else to do the work but he would also be taking extra money home.

When authorised my overtime pay rate is silly. Last time I did some I made £700 extra for not a lot of work. However, there is no way I'd waste this money on paying a Painter and Decorator, they charge a silly amount for slapping some paint on.

I'd simply do it in the evenings when the wife is out and she would then do it in the evenings I am out, simple done in around two days. No skin off my nose and no money wasted. Hell we don't even pay stupid prices for the paint like people do at stores like B&Q and Focus DIY.

Me and the wife apply this to other purchases. Needed a new 32" WS CRT TV, waited to the right time and got a 32" Sony VEGA 100Hz D3B set that should have been £800 for £349.

I have never needed to go to one of those high street computer stores for a purchase I have needed there and then. Hell if I need it I will drive to OCUK after work. The wonders of diesel and 60mpg means it is cheaper than having them deliver it...

Oh and I do value my time and if I can't do the job I will pay somebody to do it, but it does cost (as I found out having a bathroom suite fitted + shower + tiles! Ouch)

£55 for two hours work is only £27.50 per hour... not worth the effort!

* Yes I can't do math...so what? :p

I was once thinking of setting up my own I.T. related shop. I eventually decided against it because after I weighed in the overheads and a healthy profit margain, the price for any given product was stupidly high.

So, who's the poor guy, the one who pays £20 for a cable or the one who pays £300 for a grafics card every 6 months? :D

That would depend on what you usually earn. At the time it was just over 1 weeks dole money, so a very good use of those 2 hours.

There is a huge difference between a good and cheapo, standard scart lead.
Oh indeed, but given that these buggers were the same make, I was rather miffed.
