I was just about to buy a new SSD. Another Samsung 850 evo 250gb. I had a look at my orders fron last year £55.. I know the pound has fallen but but whats the excuse for near double??? Neadless to say i shall be moving stuff over to the HD for the time being!!!

their have been a lot of excuses some valid but they are all starting to lose credibility now. just hold of buying for now.

Long term lurker, but first post.

SSD prices having been going up since the end of last year unfortunately, interesting article on it on Tomshardware (http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/ssd-hdd-shortage-nand-market,news-54328.html). Basically 3D Nand production that everyone is trying to do to catch up woth Samsung has taken longer then they anticipated and so production hasn't ramped up enough. Likely prices won't start to come down till end of this year so buy now or wait as prices likely to go up for the next 6 months.

Really annoying as want to update my rig but SSD's and RAM which are both affected have both shot up by over 20% from just a few months ago.

I was slightly surprised at prices, as I'd been keeping an eye on a 1TB SSD from OcUK for around 6 months. I can understand the increase due to exchange rates, but what I was more surprised by was the fact that I could buy the same SSD elsewhere for £60 less.

Needless to say, that's what I finally did just over a week ago. Regardless of what happens price wise certainly no regrets.

OcUK would be my go to supplier and I'd normally not bother to shop around, this unfortunately will no longer be the case.

OP, have you shopped around?

True they will come down eventually but prefer to build new pc when I want to rather then waiting. I have a busy year anyway and will be interesting to see how Ryzen pans out but definitely building in 2017. As running 2500k with 250Gb ssd and want both upgraded.

It's not just ssd's which have 'doubled' in price, my ram has as well... I was intending on doubling my memory to 32GB but made the foolish mistake of thinking I'll get it a bit later as I don't need it now... it's now twice as much as when I bought it.

As said some markup you can understand but I've read that there seems to be an 'artificial' supply restriction being put on the chips which are used in ssd's and ram for pc components which is forcing prices up... it's almost like theses big companies don't want us to buy new pcs components all while moaning that we're not buying enough...

tell me about it, i looked at the 500gb 850 evo paid £149 last year now £199 still available £149 elsewhere tho so no hardship just yet, think it just depends if companies are still using old stock hence they still have lower prices whereas ocuk probably have current fresh stock

Was looking at Intel 600p or 840evo 1TB and was thinking they would come down to close to £250 by the time I build but nowhere near that at over £350.

Yeah I've had my 500GB for around 2 years now and only paid £105 for it new, they go for about the same now! Prices on everything seem to be going up in the PC space though, except for the bargain Ryzen's.

The predictions you can find from various analysts via Google suggest prices will continue to rise in 2017. And that's for non-UK markets. Once we trigger Brexit, we will have Brexit-related market adjustments in addition to these price rises. 1TB could cost £400+ by the end of 2017.

Maybe but there is talk about supply to start catching up with demand at some point this year. So hopefully by the end of the year ssd prices will have a downwards trend again.

I agree with the brexit being an issue but think most of the fall in the pound has happened as markets expecting UK to leave now. So hopefully no more then 5-10% worsening of the pound.

The 1TB Evo has gone up again by another £15 at many retailers. Now £315.

Given that my 2014 model cost me £278, I'm having second thoughts about sending it back. £10 for return postage, then £315 to buy the 2016 model... that's about £50 more expense! For 6-14% better perf... but then the original 850 EVO was no slouch anyhow... real world gains might be absolutely non-existent outside benchmarks.

Wonder how much of this is demand outstripping supply, and how much is market confidence, or even gouging...

I paid £220 for two 500GB Samsung 850 EVO drives in November 2015. They would be £300+ now.

Not only are prices going up but technology has ceased to advance for about 3 years now. It's depressing.
