Yeah but I don't think I need the hub thing
Lifx are cheaper and don't require a hub

if you want a complex scene you need a hub in the house to store the program, you can only do simpler stuff with a phone/alexa app, even with a echo dot,
these are limited in how many bulbs you can control too, and don't have zigbee either afaik

my preferred choice is a smarthing hub with hue bulbs , which as you said are 'only' £4 less than hue.

what do you mean by complex scene?

i can control lifx with my google mini speakers and my hub touchscreens as well as my app.

i can put them on schedules, etc.

Interesting, I already have a smartthings hub, so I can just use this instead of the Hue hub?

What constitutes a "complex scene"?
At the moment, I have the following which I'd like to treat as individual assets:
2x table lamps (B22 bayonet)
2x ceiling lights (B22 bayonet)
2x wall lights (with 2x candle bulbs each, E14 small Edison screw).

So that's 8x bulbs in total, but grouped into three assets. All I want to do is to be able to control those assets individually on or off, and maybe dim them. So, "Alexa, turn on table lamps" - turns on the bulbs in the lamps.
I don't want fancy scheduling, I don't want party mode, I don't want 16 million colours. Just the ability to control the on/off/dimming of the bulbs for different lights. Is that only possible buying a hub as well, or can that be done with their app/Alexa?

Tbh, I was only going to do this as an exercise in making more use of the Amazon Echo we already have - so if I've got to buy another gadget to go with it on top of the bulbs that I was already baulking at the price of) then I'll probably just leave it :p

google says lifx use cloud storage though, so the system relies on their server storing the code/event ... and if it goes down, nothing happens.
like the similar sengled system I returned to amazon.
edit: re-asserting - if you have a hub everything is local.

you're right maybe there are some limitations

the smarthings versatility with ioty devices for monitoring electric meters, say, is why I'm going to pick up their hub on ebay at some point.

Laphroaig Quarter cask for £24 and a sabrent rocket 1tb for £93 bought.

Normally only buy whisky but offers are pretty disappointing this year on that.

you can do all of that with lifx without a hub

Damn you. I literally yesterday counted the 10 bottles I've got on the go and thought hmn that'll do... Make that 11 now (I've wanted to revisit Laphroaig for a while now) :p

Hitchhikers guide to Prime. It is a popular service that you pay for that makes you spend more money on other things that you don't really need.

Its genius by amazon.

I certainly use amazon less with not having it.
I won't order unless I genuinely want over 20 quids worth of stuff.

Allows me to get better prices in amazon too because I don't feel 'I've paid for this service so better make most of it'

I use the basket as a buffer.

When I think I want something or need it, I add it and then close the page. Wait 2 days, wait a week...to see if I really want it or need it. Then after a while If I find myself in fact I don't need it, I remove it from basket.

Of course if something breaks and I have to replace it then I would just buy it.
