70 odd years serving the nation and a couple of hours across two channels seems over the top? Standard programming will resume and everyone can go back to watching the drivel that would otherwise be on.
I don’t think any normal programming is on tonight on the main channels. It’s going right through till the early hours.

Couple of hours? :/

It's been going on since lunch time. TV and radio.

Every radio station was playing depressing music all day as well lol

I don't think he'd want the whole country being depressed.

Judging by some of the comments from the hoi polloi depression at his sad demise is far from universal ;) `Tis always the way when the gentry, the wealthy or just the plain powerful have their demise.

the whole nation in mourning.

I wouldn't say this is true. Media are pushing this as much as possible but it doesn't mean everyone feels the same way, just look at some of the posts on social media. People have different views about it.

It's sad, but we don't need to hear about it all day everywhere. We know he's dead.

What's next, a leaflet drop in case someone didn't hear yet?

RIP Prince Phillip who will be missed.

A very distinguised naval career and, for me, a national treasure and I hope he has found peace.

As an anecdote, I used to work with a lass who was injured in a police vehicle in a pursuit and she went to one of the police treatment centres for physio, Harrogate I think but I might be wrong.

Anyway, Prince Phillip was a guest during her stay and standing beside the lass I know was another lass from another force who was also injured in a police vehicle crash and Phillip asked the lass I know why she was there then the lass next to her said why. Phillip's reply ?

' It doesn't say much for women drivers. '

Slightly contentious in this day and age but I was bad laughing when she told me and she said the whole place fell about laughing when he said it.

I don't think referring to Chinese as slitty eyed is "speaking forthrightly".

Yes he did makes some gaffs but from what I understand he was trying to put people at ease not offend people.

RIP, I reckon this will have a really bad effect on the Queen. You often hear of couples who have been together for a long long time where one dies and then not long after the other dies despite seeming in good health. Going to be a tough time for her to lose Phillip.

Statistically speaking that is mostly only the case when the one left behind is a man but when the one left behind is a woman they tend to not die soon after. (Like Queen Victoria)

@Dalandius

My Nan was an example. When my grandad died we was sure she wouldn’t last the year as she was so devastated, but she went on for another 10. Many of them happy years. It makes a huge difference if you have family around you.

Oh well, as usual, a bunch of really bitter people dragging things down. Not to mention the saddening decline in civility on here.

Interesting that he didn't want "a fuss", so the funeral will be pretty low key.

Wherever you stand on the monarchy, I think the royals (mainly the Queen and Duke of Edinburgh) have been far better ambassadors for our country than any of the jokers in Westminster could possibly hope to be. I don't fancy the alternative. :)

I'd agree with you on the Queen and Phillip; not sure about any of the rest of them though.
Personally I think when the Queen passes its likely to re-spark a bit of debate about the monarchy
