Not unexpected, but certainly very sad. I worry for the queen and her longevity now he's gone after so long together.
On the 2 occasions I met and spoke to him (granted briefly) he seemed very friendly and genuine even in a 'passing down the line' type interaction.

One thing that really surprised me to hear is that he was co founder of WWF, and was instrumental in getting it off the ground. RIP
They never got over the steroid scandal. I mean, look at Hulk Hogan.. he was never the same.

This really feels like a milestone and the beginning of the end of an era.

The Royals will endure sure, but it feels like once the Queen passes the royal family will be more a gimmick and disconnected from our nation and history.

RIP Prince Philip
i understand your thoughts, but i feel this is simply because you're viewing the next in line as not being the same authority/respect as the current queen has.

the trouble is you're comparing someone with all these years experience to someone currently with zero. whoever takes the position, charles, william etc, they have never actually been in this position and so can't compete yet.

give them time.

Would say a lot about the state of modern people if they get upset because they cant watch one episode of a tv show when they want.

Well, it has often been said that TV is the opium of the masses, and withdrawing that, even for an afternoon will have an effect on the simple minded.

I suppose the 21st Century equivalent of that would be that Social Media is the opium of the masses, and withdrawing that, even for an hour will cause global anarchy :)

When Diana died I missed the start of my shift because I used the radio as an alarm but all the programming changed to sombre classical music rather than the rock that woke me normally. I still hold a grudge.

It was his lack of filter that I most liked. He spoke his mind and damn what people thought. You just dont get that sort of spoken honesty these days, people will zip up their mouths and hide their thoughts rather than stand their ground and just say what they think.
Quite agree. This was one on my favourite moments of his :D

They've literally been trained for decades for the role, they're experienced enough.

Well...

The World Wildlife Fund (WWF) gives special meaning to the word “conservation.” The organization, founded in 1961 by a group of wealthy trophy hunters, including HRH Prince Philip,

Prince Philip (L) poses with a Tiger that he shot. The Queen is in centre.

apparently believes that conserving animals means keeping them around long enough for well-heeled “sportsmen” to blast them out of the woods, oceans, skies, plains of Africa, and jungles of Asia. Past WWF chapter presidents include C.R. “Pink” Gutermuth, who also served as president of the National Rifle Association, and trophy hunter Francis L. Kellogg, who is legendary for his massive kills. In its early days, the WWF even used fur auctions to raise funds. Since then, the WWF has learned that most people are appalled by hunting and trapping, so today, the organization veils its true stance under phrases like “sustainable development,” arguing that killing is acceptable under some circumstances. When answering difficult questions about its policy on hunting, trapping, and whaling, the WWF is careful never to state outright that it approves of all these activities. But don’t be fooled, the WWF’s intentions are all too clear and deadly.
Not nice.

The Queen has the respect of being in this position for a long time, the world has moved on and monarchy is now outdated. Charles or William will never have the same support the Queen has/had. I can see the support of abolishing the monarchy growing once she goes.

Moved on how exactly? It's not like Elizabeth or her father had ruling power so nothings changed there.

Not sure it will happen so soon. I suspect William may be the last though.

But do we really want a politician as head of state...

I do think it's mainly the, sorry in advance, older generation who have a fondness for the royalty.

It's sad for the royal family but I'm quite apathetic to it all really. He reached 99 which is a pretty good age and more than most of us will reach.

In a year where people have died in their thousands due to covid, people have lost jobs, livelihoods and their mental health suffered, children missing education and school meals and social interaction: I find it really hard to be sad that an overly privileged man, who had a pretty marmite personality to put it lightly, died at the age of 99.

Though I will be grateful if it means we get a day off of work
