Prison

One of the sensible posts. Stop judging him on the minute amount of detail you have and ask for his side of the story.
You could be banged up here for three months for copyright infringement and piracy. Doesn't tell you if you were at the centre of a ring or had just bought some pirated games and chipped your console. Not so black and white

Except he's said he's been convicted of GBH. That's not just getting in to a bit of a fight. Something has to get really nasty for it to be GBH. Generally skin has to be gashed and it's got to be something that'll affect that person for several years to come (not actually in any guidelines like that, but I've read/seen enough cases to know). It is relatively difficult for a nice person to commit GBH.

@Neoni - if there was a 'genuine reason' he wouldn't have been convicted of GBH.

What would make my life hell if i was in prison is not the building or the regime but the type of person i would be living with. Imagine having to bunk with a scummy dirty chav whos in for mugging someones nan.

This forum is full of righteous freaks.

The the OP - I wouldn't have a clue how it is and I certainly don't envy you! Try and update us from the inside..

Im a serving Prison Officer, if you have any questions just ask it here, basically its not as bad as you think but dont think you can beat the system and dont lip off to the staff or constantly complain or whinge cos it really annoys us and you cant win, just keep your head down do your time and dont come back

I don't know the circumstances surrounding your crime so I will just wish you good luck and hope you learn something from it mate.

Are most of the inmates respectful to you?

What a crap thing to say there might have been genuine reason for his actions.

It isn't very nice to see your best mate on the receiving end of something like GBH. To see how much he has changed. No confidence, no get up and go etc. Makes you feel sick. And that's probably the cause of my bias opinions.

He may well have a genuine reason for his actions, eg self defense. And if so I take it back. Id like him to clear it up for me.

some of them are alright but some can be a real PITA and always try and challenge you or sometimes they just start on you, most of the time it ends with them getting dragged to segregation and on a governors charge

Spent time in three different prisons a few years ago and cannot believe the rubbish I have read in this thread.

Depending on your sentence and the seriousness of the crime will determine what category prison/wing you will be sent to.

Some prisons are working prisons with jobs for inmates to do during day others which may be small or just have a small budget will offer less and possibly long bang-ups.

I expect you will be placed in a C or D category area with D being an open prison.

My advice is to keep your head down, do as your told and just get on with it.

Wont be get Cat B for being a violent offender?

You cannot go to prison for rape and say your inside for theft as the inmates(trusties)will have access to your files

Why would the inmates be given someones personal file?

However sex offenders/rapists/child batterers are given plenty of kickins and rightly so i might add

Hardly, two people was classed as sex offenders for having sex with the pavement and sex with a bike. You can be classed as a sex offender and be put on the register for seemingly anything nowadays.

inmates dont get access to details of others crimes, the way they find out is either from dodgy staff or they recognise them from court

he will have to spend sometime in a cat b local until he is farmed out to cat c depending on risk assessments etc, all prisons now have the core day which means bang up from friday at 5 until monday morning with only exercise periods in between its cost cutting by the service cos its saves on staffing

Oh My God LOL!

:p

Good luck mate. I had a talk from 2 prison officers at school last year, and we got to ask all kinds of questions, I'm sure all prisons are different, but apparently most of the rumours you hear are true, and it ain't a nice place.
(This was Chelmsford Prison)

Our school did a project on prisons a couple of years ago. The main complaints(based on a very small sample though)

1. Boredom

2. Poor quality of food.

3. Missing family/friends/etc

4. Amount of time locked up in cell.
