Private Dashcam footage to be used by Welsh Police to prosecute

Good idea for the really really stupid stuff.

But I think it will get stopped, because they will get the 40mph everywhere types uploading a video everytime someone overtakes them.

A good idea on the whole but I do agree that there will be numpties uploading all sorts

I think the idea will fall flat on its face after a few months when the usual "DCWs" begin submitting every non event and in turn showing up their own poor judgement and road discipline. We all know the type who often feature in UK bad driving compilation channels these days.

Rule should be if you submit any evidence like that, then you get charged with wasting police time yourself :p

Or, at least 5 minutes of footage before the "event" must also be uploaded to youtube and made public on youtube :p
that's the case already afaik, 5 minutes before and 5 after or so it is for cycling related videos on roadsafe website.

it is going to get out of hand and tbf I couldn't care less. Police is already over-stretched so all this is going to do is give dashcam warriors a chance to feel proud of submitting something and getting nothing reviewed.

I bet only the worst case scenarios will be reviewed, talking crashes, very close calls, hit and runs etc..

Sounds like they're going to be discussing it on Jeremy Vine (radio 2), standby for some uninformed and/or annoying people giving their opinions on national radio.

This is a good idea as long as it has the right filters and controls in place, which I'm confident they will if for no other reason than to whittle down the number of submissions and only having the manpower to go after the very worst. When you watch the dashcam footage on the BBC article, they are examples of shocking driving which anyone would want to see them dealt with as a result.

One really good thing about the initiative is that you CANNOT just upload some footage and be done with it. The person filming must stop using the SD card, put it to one side and keep it for potentially 6 months. They must also provide a witness statement and attend court if required. Furthermore, the person who submits the footage is going to have their OWN driving subject to scrutiny as it must include the whole journey AND anything else that is on the SD card (have they been speeding? Have they themselves driven badly or aggressively?).

In reality, this means that 99% of people will be put off by it, unless it is an example of very bad driving. This is on top of the filters that the police will have put in place to stop people sending in someone making a mistake on a roundabout or such like.

Hopefully, with the above considered, this initiative should focus on the absolute nutters on the road, and not incriminate people who have just made a mistake as we all do when driving.

Thing is, I don't drive anywhere without a dashcam any more. But it's to protect myself for insurance/legal reasons, not go around grassing people up for silly things. If I see a hit and run then I might hand it in, but everything else that does not involve me directly...meh.

I suspect most drivers are the same, which means they will get 99% rubbish.
