Pro Cycling Discussion 2017

That's a terrible because he was given a spare bike from neutral service by the Mavic car. It's a disgrace giving out bikes from neutral service without giving them a good safety check first. I'm guessing that's the reason he crashed again soon after.

Incident packed stage but dull racing again, in my opinion anyway. Not a fan at all of races finishing at the bottom of climbs, it's dangerous and no one wants to see GC contenders regrouping on the descent then team time trialling for 15km before sprinting terribly.

Horrible to see Porte's crash, was watching live.

Looked like a combination of a lapse in concentration and perhaps not realising the ground was quite so soft & sunken there? Could have been horrendous if more riders were involved.

Hope porte is OK, but he has showed time and time again that he really is bad at descending. Bardet on the other hand.

I'm with oms would much rather have an uphill finish, just introduces danger but can understand the organisers wanting something different from the usual sky train.

Watching yesterday, my faith in cycling was completely broken, restored and partially broken again in mere seconds following Aru's attack, he very clearly saw there was an issue, but the work done by Richie Porte et al to shut it down was good to see, but a shame to see Froome try to give him the argie bargie after, even if he did apologise moments later.

Supposedly that was a loss of balance due to being knocked by a spectator? Didn't see it myself, not sure if it's any more believable than Aru saying he just plain didn't see Froome's arm up in the air...

Off tangent, more detailed routes for the ToB are now available and Stage 7 goes right past my door, more or less :)

I'm not convinced by that.
I guess it's possible they could have better quality images but it doesn't make sense that they would release the lower quality ones to the broadcasters and not give access to the other images. And I cant think of any other "line timing" technology that would be more accurate? The transponders on the bikes certainly wont be.
I've been watching the Eurosport highlights and they talk about a line technology camera which doesn't use a shutter and is only 'a few pixels' wide so they can determine which wheel passed the sensor first? Either that or I read it online somewhere...

Utterly amazing sprint, Kittel has been incredible but quite bummed for EBH as he's long overdue a stage win. Poor guy dropped off far too early by the DDD train and they left out front hanging when he didn't want to be!

Struggling to get into the Tour this year possibly because the parcours is awful. Good ride from Calmejane today though.
Incredible ride, time and time again he looked like he'd cracked and that stint with the cramp had me on the edge of my seat! Amazing to come through with the win after that, gutsy ride & imagine he'll be on a pro team very shortly...

Hope Porte is OK that looked awful, he really is an unlucky guy :(
Concussion, minor fractures, cuts & bruises. Amazing considering the impact! Looked horrific and was amazed to see him talking to the spectators/roadside assistance as really thought he'd be knocked out after hitting the rock wall. Martin did very well to finish as he went down hard too.

Gutted for G as well but what is with him this year? Any reason for him to come off his bike and he'll be off it .
Yeah, really gutted! It's not been his year so far has it!? :(

I've not seen much footage of the incident, only immediately afterwards. He was down further up the road to a few others so I don't think he actually crashed, just was brought down?

Hate to say I agree. Bardet should've won that & I was glad that Uran won (and what a way to win! 52*11!). Barguil did well but they'd let him rest too much on the run back in - he was sat on the back for 10km! I much preferred the shorter finish of the Dauphine (if they must have a finish after a descent).

Shame Contador and Quintana didn't have the legs, quite surprised by Quintana really as thought it would be a good stage for him?! Aru the sneaky dirty rat needs some of the rubbish luck other better riders have been having. Really dislike him, didn't he attack when Froome had a mechanical in the vuelta last year? Should be him leading out Fuglsang, not the other way around.

Gutted Gesink is out too. Dangerous stage claimed 4 top riders? Really was a Queen stage.

Yep. I'm pretty sure thats where the photo-finish images we see come from. That's why everything looks out of proportion and gets stretched/distorted a bit. I think that's the same as photo-finish in other sports too. I'm sure i've seen the same type of images from athletics.

Please discuss whether the exhaust fumes of the support vehicles affects the riders. It seems to me the exhaust could be an issue especially in the climbs when they are moving slowly with little wind. All those motorcycles and cars spewing pollution into the air as these riders are breathing heavily would be very detrimental.
for sure on some in S. France climbs where motorist at full speed you smell the diesel
(not sure skoda are as prevalent this year - not on itv4 coverage)

From what I can gather Rafal Majka wanted to get past him on the descent, so G let him past but a few bends further, Majka came off and G hit him.

Pretty sure I read something a while back about a Tour in the middle east will be using electric vehicles / PHEV's but maybe I'm making it up as my GoogleFu is weak this evening.

Really do think cretin's that set off powder flares should be promptly shoved off the mountain and/or arrested. No matter how 'cool' they make things look they're a PITA for both riders, spectators and assisting vehicles.

Skoda providing all the vehicles again. Never seen so many kodiaks, superbs and octavias.

Having ridden the Mont du Chat a number of times watching that crash was very uncomfortable for me. I know the mountain pretty well now, and that descent is one of the most knackering things I've ever done in cycling.

He's going to be out for a long time.
