Problem on startup

Every time I restart my computer I get this message:

"Checking File system on C:
The type of the file system is NTFS

One of your disks needs to be checked for consistency. You may cancel the disk check, but it is strongly reccomended that you continue.
Windows will now check the disk."

When it has ran the check it says "Windows has checked the file system and found no problems"

I have Windows 64bit and my HDD is a "Seagate Barracuda Green 2TB SATA 6Gb/s Hard Drive - OEM"

This only started yesterday and the only things I did yesterday was install a couple of games (The Witcher Enhanced Ed and Crysis Warhead) after they installed I ran disk cleanup, defragged the hdd and ran a spybot scan. Now when I went into disk defragmenter I noticed that along with my C: there is also another disk listed called System Reserved (I did not defrag this one) Any help would be great.

P.S. I have an i7 2600K with one of the older motherboards (not revised) is this a sign of the problem with this series of mobo?

With the windows 7 install it will create a "system reserved" section, much like this:
SYSres.png

Nothing to worry about.

The problem with the motherboards was due to the SATA ports degrading over time. What motherboard do you have? As its a 6Gb/s drive im guessing its in a 6Gb/s SATA port? Meaning it won't be affected by the issue.

For some reason windows is running check disk on startup. This can be caused by a corrupt registry or by your PC regestering "dirty sectors" on ur drive. you can always tell windows not to do this.
By running CHKNTFS /X C: (if C is the letter of the drive)
This will exclude the drive from startup checks.
Im sure there is a way to check for and unmount the dirty sectors as well using chkdsk. But im sure google would be able to tell you how to do that :)

Sorry but in my experience if chkdsk is running every time or even often on startup then its a sign that the drive may be starting to fail.

Had many many customers confirm this when they come to me with their dead drives.

Get everything backed up just to be safe

I hope not. The pc is only about three weeks old. And it is doing it every start up.

Right, I have reinstalled windows and no more checks. Decided it was probably quicker installing everything again than searching for hours. Will report back if problem comes back. Thanks everyone

1. Check the SMART output from a Windows app or your BIOS (e.g. HD Tune "Health Check")
2. Do a full disk-surface check (e.g. chkdsk full, or HD Tune error scan with surface scan enabled)

Sorry I can't recall the exact commands, I'm on Fedora presently so I can't look up the help pages.

Let us know if it reports anything interesting.

Everything Was working fine until today, I plugged my external hard drive into one of the front panel usb 2 ports, my usb mouse stopped working, tried unplugging it and putting it back in but still didn't work. Used the keyboard to shut the pc down and when I turned it back on the bloody checks have come back.

Have you done the disk surface checks with HDTune we asked?

Also ensure you have the latest BIOS available, as if issues happen when you plug IO devices in then that is typical of BIOS problems.

chkntfs /x c:

If you have 2 drive, C and D, you can disable chkdsk with the command below

chkntfs /x c: d:

The chkntfs utility works by modifying the BootExcecute value in the system registry. The BootExecute value is located in the following registry key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CURRENTCONTROLSET\CONTROL\Session Manager

The default value is for BootExecute is autocheck autochk *. When you use the /x switch, it will add a /k parameter prior to the asterisk. The /k parameter excludes volumes from being checked for the presence of a dirty bit.

EDIT this was cut n pasted from a nother sorce but due to overclockers rules i cant post the link

I had the same problem on a machine when upgraded windows and just changed the reg value in regedit,

Hope it helps

I was in the middle of running checks with hdtune and my monitor has turned itself off. The pc is still on but the monitor has gone to standby and won't come back on

Sounds like computer has crashed...think its more than just chkdsk running when it shouldnt :(

If you use hd regenerator then it boot in dos to check the hard drive eliminating any software problems.

The Screen didn't turn back on so I pressed the windows button then right and enter, the screen came back on and the pc shutdown normally. I got a fleeting glimpse of hd tune, it was more than half finished with no red squares, all green

Just disable sleep mode and try again (turn your monitor off if you are worried about burn-in just disable sleep on the graphics card), also see if there is anything interesting the the SMART section (export the data, screen-shot or whatever).

Also the BIOS update is potentially important, do you have the latest version for your motherboard?

can you look at the reg settings for autochk chksdsk *. in regedit HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CURRENTCONTROLSET\CONTRO L\Session Manager
you may just find it is set to scan every time you start in there and that is an easy fix as i had this on a customers machine and set it correctly and he never had the problem again.

Failing that have you got a version of xp if so put it in Boot to it choose repair when it is at its main what do you want to do screen IE set up screen and choose R then in the DOS Screen choose 1 as the c drive then leave password blank and then type chkdsk /r and let it scan and fix any problems there then try it again booting to win 7 , By doing it this way you are scanning the c drive when not in use so ALL of the drive can be scanned, whilest doing a check in windows certain parts of c drive cant be fixed etc as it is IN USE

Also turn off the sleep and hard drive shut off etc in power settings
for a desktop i would never have it go to sleep or turn of monitor etc and as for image burn that was MORE a CRT problem and Plasma screen problem i have NEVER had image burn on my tft/ led screens and they have been left on the same screen all day sometimes (downloading)....

ive been getting this consistency check lately. it's happened twice now :\ each time saying that it it was clean with no errors ....

the disc in question is my main c: which is 2x 320GB WD in RAID 0

it's only started happening since i installed test drive unlimited 2... don't know if it's something to do with that as it sometimes randomly crashes and then fails to load....

i'm currently running a disc check with the automatically check and fix errors checked... it's on stage 4 of 5 and it's not come up with any errors yet....

think when it loads i'll get HDtune and run some checks on that....

any other suggestions? could it be one of the raid discs on its way out ? hope not :( got i42 next weekend and don't fancy spending more money getting some new drives :(

edit: think it might be worth just doing a fresh install now?
