Problem with new 670's

Sorry should have mentioned that I've tried it at 4.4GHz and still have the same issue.

Thats what im getting at if you run your CPU @4.0, 4.4 or 4.6ghz - are you getting the same FPS/GPU usage.

An i7 can run BF3 better because it has more threads/cores not because it runs any faster. I don't go above 4.0ghz on mine and don't have a bottleneck.

dropping to 50fps? lol

I would be happy to game all day at 50fps!!
I really wouldn't worry about that and adding a 2nd monitor shouldn't cause any problems either.

I suspect you are correct it's a CPU bottleneck however, you seem to view a bottleneck differently than I do!

If you check any of these benchmark results you will quite often see the framerate drop very low during certain parts of a game, i've seen 20fps on top end cards mentioned.
50 fps is certainly nothing to be concerned about?

Yes the same GPU random usage, CPU is still at 100% and I still get drops into the 50s at times. Higher than 120 frames doesn't bother me but dropping that low does.

3770k will arrive tomorrow, can report back then to see what difference it makes if any.

I am sure you will see an improvement with an i7.

lol 50 fps! That's my target, not my low!

Also remember the low with SLI can quite often be the same as it would be with a single card.

I have a 120Hz monitor and because i'm used to the smoothness of gaming at that rate, dropping to 50fps really makes a difference.

It's more bugging me tbh, having the power that two 670s give but not being able to fully use it seems a waste to me. Plus the extra benefit of HT will help my SETI@Home output too. I know that even with a 3770k I still probably won't completely eliminate the bottleneck but hopefully the extra threads will be of benefit. Like I said if it isn't then i'll simply return it and wait till something faster arrives.

I don't care about having 400fps, just want to keep my minimums as high as possible.

Ok Guys thanks for all the post,

heres what ive been upto

ive done the following
reset pc back to default clocks 3.3
updated to latest bios
updated all my mb drivers too
clean install of vid drivers using driver sweeper

tested using 1 monitor both MW3 and Darkstriders 2 run at 260fps at 1920 x 1080

now i then selected sli (span mode)
run with 1920 x 1080 (1 screen on) mw3 = 3fps again and Darkstriders 2 = 20 again unplayable!!

ive also tried swapping the sli bridge to 2nd connector but still the same

 not a clue

OK, take out the graphics card that is giving you 260fps, set it aside and put the other card in on its own. (same slot as the card you have just removed)
Try running the games again to see if you get 260fps again.

If that is OK, (260 fps) try a card in the second PCIE slot on its own, now this might not work depending on your motherboard.

It will eliminate the bottleneck. At least everyone I've seen who has gone i5 to i7 have reported the same thing. Enjoy :).

I think we have either a suspect PCIE slot or a suspect graphics card. Either way the above steps will take you towards a solution.

Ok ill check the cards 1 at a time this afternoon

but been googling post after post
it seams am not the only one having this problem

its been reported on some sites its a problem with nvidia driver an mombo problem apparently nvidia know about it

am not totally stuck just means ill have to keep my matrox tripplehead2go untill they sort it

Just jumping in here.. did you do a fresh install of windows, i had this problem with my old 6970's no matter what i did to remove old drivers etc i was getting poor fps, so i put a fresh copy of windows on and it doubled the fps and more.. gd luck

The speed it takes to reinstall windows with a SSD, I think it is a safe way to go. Took me about 4 hours with doing the updates and getting my steam games working. I lost BF3 because it is on my SSD but downloaded over night and done job :)

The GPU usage varies a lot from game to game and how much stress it put on 1-2-3 cards !.

In COD Black Ops my GPU-usage ranges any where from 15 to 60% and my cards run at a constant 915MHz. Boost clock has only 1 time kicked in during the whole single player campaign.
But that game is also FPS locked at 90FPS ... can't get it higher since the latest patch completely shutdown the console option.

As for the OP problem, I'd say doing a reinstall would be wise.

Thought i'd update received the i7 and installed.

First impressions are yes it does make things smoother and yes minimum FPS has increased. After clocking it to 4.6GHz and having a few rounds of BF3 the FPS didn't drop below the 90s so that's an improvement. Also on a plus point the CPU happily ran at 2200Mhz memory and 4.6Ghz only needed 1.3v so was rather impressed with that.

I didn't expect miracles and the GPU usage was still hovering around the 60-95% mark which i'll put down to using 1080p as a resolution.

I've decided i'll still be DSRing the i7 purely because it wasn't a huge jump in performance for the cost.

Haha thought I might see that image.

My plan all along was to see whether it made any obvious performance increase over my 3570k and the fact that it doesn't, means I can simply return and save my money for something else.

If I hadn't of tried it then I would have been left wondering "was there more performance available to me" when the answer is, no, not with an 3770k.
