Project Alternate

Things are calming down a bit here now so im continuing with the lighting,
I've now moved on to the logos & some internal lighting..

Also now covered all the internal panels with leather, the leather is in keeping with the overall look of the desk,
not too shiny (glossy) yet still able to reflect some light in the places I want.

This is the main right side cover, hole for the lift & square cut for the pump

Thats all for today as im needed for daddy duties :D

Reworked the Sabertooth a bit more, decided after seeing it inside the desk that the silver
would look better black to match the other parts.

I left some brown bits but if there still seen when the components are added then I will most
likely also paint them Red or black.

Looks smart that. What paint did you use for the details? Brush or spray?

Thanks, I used both, the red is brushed with water based paints & the blacks are done with plastic dip paints.
easy to remove if needed & shouldn't damage the plastics hopefully.

Almost done with the 3.5 HD racks, they will each hold 2 drives for now, but can be adjusted to fit 3 if needed.

Made from wood like almost everything.

Made some grills that match the ones I did for the sides of the desk a couple of months back.

Added some RGB lighting, so they will have independent options as do all the other parts of the desk, this will give endless lighting/colour
options & modes.

once the HD racks are completed I can then move back on to the hard tubes :)

Looks absolutely amazing so far, really can't wait to see the finished project.

As for the hinges I would go with red but a darker, less glossy one than pictured

The hinges also? or just the speaker covers?
sounds like a good idea though, going to wait till the internals are all done now
then will have a better idea as to the looks.

was also thinking of adding some red to the front fans if I add red to the speakers/hinges.

I meant to say the speaker surrounds however the hinges would look good in the same colour.

Get it depends on the ratio of red to black after it's all assembled

yeah definitely, & the hinges will be considered also :)
using blood red water, so going to try keep the reds as close as possible.

Great looking build so far, i would have opted to use a polyurethane expanding glue on the MDF all the heat weight and expansion/contraction from the heat in the desk will eventually de bond the joints. Unless you pinned and screwed every joint? But i don't remember seeing that done in your posts.

Had never heard of that glue, but will try that out in the future should I use MDF again.
was warned about MDF once I started the build, so used MDF sealer on most the desk & all joints,
wood glue & screws or bolts was used on every joint apart from the parts that come away i.e the top, bottom left & right.

I hope nothing bad happens after all this work :(
but I always have the option of wrapping the whole thing, almost did that but changed my mind last minute.
painting was a lot more costly & hard, but glad atm I went with it.

Honestly it's brilliant you can buy 5min,15min and hour versions if i remember right, you mist both sides to be bonded with a sprayer like what barbers use etc. clamp/pin the bond and leave to set. I've used it to build all sorts (i'm a joiner by trade) and it's never let me down. Just be sure to knife away the excess when tacky so it comes away cleanly otherwise it can be a pig to get off.

I was viewing your thread last night and the missus said thats a nice desk PFFFFT :D
