Project Beetle !

Well the beetle had a cracking start to the year, and was hoping to be on the road by the bug jam, BUT I'm still waiting for the case to arrive grrrrrrrrr.
At least I've sorted the gearbox out now, I've got a very nice by the sounds of it US built T1 box with cro-mo main and 1st/2nd, so should be a good strong box(it's last home was in a 2276 turbo buggy / no troubles), should be arriving early next week i should think.
So now with any luck the car should be on the road next year ( hmmm, how many times have i thought that !)
I need to get it more mobile, as we're planning to pull the garage down and relocate it / god alone knows where all the stuff is going to go during the build!

Sorry it's not a 'look at it finished' post but it'll give you something to look forward to :) .... ............ :(

he he, just made myself laugh, lack of search button ment i couldn't find this post so i just made a new thread linking over to a near identical thread at VZi, did it all previewed it just about to submit, then i noticed my sig / I amaze myself sometimes :D

Hey Dead Dog. You a sprayer / body man by trade? (not had a chance to read the whole thread if already mentioned?)

Been down the local college today to see about doing some courses for panel beating/spraying etc. I really fancy a career change into something i actually enjoy and interested in.

Any chance i could bug (fnar fnar) you for some info?

Loving the car btw.

It's looking good DD. Make sure you post up plenty of pics of the engine

Batf1nk your sig makes me :D every time. It must be some time ago now

I was with one of my clients today, he has a *** convertible beetle. Its amazing I have never seen anything like it. 30 years old and only been registered for 4 months.

I will try and get a pic the next time i see him.

best thing to do would be to pop along to your local college and see what they have to offer, or you could try going to some good bodyshops amd ask if they would be prepared to train someone up, thats how i got into the trade - although i did have the recomendation/referenceof of a sikkens rep.

Dont mean to drag the thread OT. Sorry.

My local colleges only offer full time courses. As in apprenticeships (speeling ?! lol). 16 hours a week over 3 days, plus i need to be on the books of a VAT registered company for the college check up on me with.

Looks like a night shift job and a couple of voluntary days at a bodyshop is the only way i can afford realistically to do it.

BIG PANTS !

you will have noticed I have been waiting for a case for ages now.......
well I just heard yesterday that serrano VW ( where ordered from) has gone belly up.
I've just sent them an e-mail for them to confirm if it got shipped before close. The post at VZi about closure from seranno is dated 29/8/07, I rang him to inquire about the case 3/4 weeks ago, so theoretically it could be on it way but I'm not holding out much hope.

I heard this from the guy I got the box from yesterday, a light at the end of the tunnel..... he has a case thats exactly to the spec I'm after its new and he only wants £120 for it( bit of a bummer, if I'd heard about Serrano's a couple of days ago I could have had a case right now !!, I guess I'll have to wait for it to be posted ho hum) and seem as I paid by CC I should be able to get spons back.

so soon I should be able to get cracking........ the only thing now is we've done the final clearance on my brother house as, as of monday it sold / gone so my garage is full of stuff - things are never easy are they;)

real sorry, nothing to tell atm.
been busy doing other stuff (lame excuse!) and been decorating the house, and coming this year extensions inc GARAGE REBUILD / BIGGER!, god only knows what I'm going to do with all the stuff in the garage & above the garage not even including the beetle - HELP ME!

oh a teeeeeeeny bit of beetle news - I got a MSD turbo timer as recomended, so when it is going it should be sweeter;)

VolksWorld show is soon, maybe I need to get my ass there to motivate me;)

if your drinking anything swallow it - I don't want to be responsible for loads of electrical fires or liquid damage..... I've been doing some work on the beetle:D

Had a huge clear out in the garage last week end so I could get to the damn thing and set to removing the gearbox which was done easily as the last one hasn't even been used!, bit of a dilema the 3/4th gearing isn't ideal for my 2276 turbo application so was thinking of getting it changed, but thought I'd use it for a year and see how it is, I know the box had been serviced recently and it was last in a simular engined buggy on the strip so I know its in good order and kinda will be OK so a gear change can wait!

Thought if I fit the monster tach then it'll motivate me to see it working!! (yes I know it needs turning a little)

Had a teeny sort with the electrics under the bonnet but could do with getting a few odds 'n sods so left it at that.

Today with some help from Jay we stripped the new heads and I had a short blast with the die grinder - more a polish that full port & polish was advised that badly ported heads work worse than std(which kinda made sence!), and they weren't that cheap so thought I'd go mild rather than wild! - pics bellow (the head IS NOT ANYWHERE NEAR FINISHED !! before people comment! )

last weeks work:

todays:

did have some stuff on stand by from CB performance but the P&P was HUGE so will source UK, big bash this week end so hopefully I can get some stuff there - really could do with the rest of the engine bits !

Polishing the inlets results in fuel falling out of the air/fuel mix doesn't it?

*n
Yup, sticks and pools up on the smooth surface. The 'after' finish he has on the inside of the heads up there is ideal. Smooth but not polished.

Yes, it can do. Polished ports look good when the head is on display in the shop, that's pretty much it. Dead Dogs ports aren't looking polished to me though, the shiny bit just down from the valve seat is just from a milling cutter that has been used whilst the head was machined for larger valve seat inserts.

So is the general opinion don't bother with the ports just do the combustion chamber( your right, I haven't touched the ports - yet :(), and pretty much leave them in the finish they are now pretty much - if so Yey! it only took about 20 mins :D

I will also be matching the inlet manifolds to make them the same size as the head inlet.

These are pretty much the heads but without the cnc porting
