Project Beetle !

That's looking really good, I always find this part of a project frustrating as it's very nearly finished but not quite there!

Looks awsome. The turbo probably cost more than my entire car.

Are you adding any additional cooling? Is it running on stock internals?

Seen this thread a few times...nice to see you are still going, love the paint job, it going to be areal hoot to drive :)

Keep us posted :)

I've got a oil rad w/fan - engine spec is a page or two back along with a nice vid of the engine in its last car

I am soooooooo looking faroward to tacking it for a spin - you will get coverage !!

Been busy on it, really trying to get it on the road for the bugjam :D
Painted air inlet silver with blue flicks - pimping!
Made top & bottom brackets for the heater matrix for the charge cooler all bolted up & in place.
Finished wiring on the car, guages, tacho, boost gauge, relay for oil cooler fan & water pump.
Sorted a couple of oil leaks out on the box, which weirdly only started since the engine went in ???? one was just were bolts hadn't been put back in by previous owner / take it he had a solid trany bracket, other is a wee leak from the side cover I repaired metal epoxy has sorted it!
Oil & fuel lines were just 'loose' to check the fit, so just went around tightening them up.
Final fit of turbo & lines & hoses.
Oh yeah made an exhaust up that is all final fitted too.
Filled water res up, to find substantial leaking on some pipes & matrix, really tighten up those jubilee clips, and some sealer on the matrix.
Re level gearbox oil
Fill Engine with new oil
Stuck some fuel in the tank.
Turn over the engine a load of times by hand.
Unplugged ECU & turned over engine to get oil round some more.
Thought I'd see if Fuel pump was working -yes found leak on a pipe I hadn't touched & assumed was tight / uh uh!
Plugged ECU back in.
Some of this was finished tonight, was getting a bit late.

Couldn't resist few turns of the engine, and it breathed into life :D:D:D
Basically a quick on & off.
I am chuffed to bits, the race is really on for bug jam, car is booked in for MOT thursday / may change it to friday!

I'll sort some pics out & vid soon!

i'll hopefully see you at this year bugjam :D

Proper gutted, no bug jam for the bug.
Found oil leak on longer engine run at the cooler in & out, I rekkon they sold me the wrong threaded male-male(or not 100% right one) so that needs to be sorted.
Fuel leak at tank, despite this being tested for leaks when I did it and OK I have a wee weep at the tank.
Indicator stalk has died propably of boredom!, ordered one today appears to be the wrong one
Also horn is playing up.

I am REAL gutted, and what makes it worse is I work near billing and today saw a few bug 'n campers on the road, went past tesco's @ wellingborough loads in there stocking up, tomorrow will be a lot worse

Never mind eh, I have put the work in to get it on the road just hit with a few last minute snaggs, even asked for tomorrow off work to sort things out, but we're well busy so uh uh
At least it will be on the road soon

Yo!!

I've been busy on it, althought it been going silly things that needed re-doing, the main PITA has been the rad for the charge cooler and it's eternal springs!
anyway photos for you .....

exhaust made up from this lot :

after finally conquering the stupid charge cooler rad and other little odds 'n ends...

so there you go 99% finished, unfortunately it's decided not to start now - I don't seem to be getting a spark / hmmm
hopefully I can resolve this in time for getting it mot'd and on the road for vw action / Yey!!

work recently done:
Made bracket to stop exhaust hitting rear wing.
Made a Bar to hold engine lid down / secure w/pin.
Re-did OSR axle, turned out one of the falcrom plates had slip behind axle end and was stopping it from going in far enough, after a short descussion with a certain someone it was agreed that this should be rectified ;) , luckily the plate worked its way back into place the moment before I was going to take out the two circlips that hold it all in place / result! , all back together and correct.
Damn charge cooler rad.
Sorted the horn, a length of wire wanted replacing.
Fitted OS running board.
Stuck the wheels on.
Got it off the axle stands and back on terafirma (after a long time in the air!)
Pushed it outside / SUNSHINE !!
Quick clean off and quick machine polish of bonnet, roof, engine lid.

I think the shock of being on its on own feet AND in the fresh air sent it into shock, and wouldn't start!

oh yes, the front will being hitting the deck a bit more, thats as high as it goes.
quite happy with the rear, although may come down a bit more ;)

Lookng great, nice to see the paint in the sunshine, great stuff. I know it's taken a long time but definitely worth it no?

I wouldn't have chosed those wheels personally, but at this stage you proably just want to get it on the road! The headlight surrounds look a different colour too but no big deal. Chrome would look damn well insead IMO.

Hope you get it running and on the road soon. Looking forward to some new pics :)

cheers guys, it's been a long haul, sounds silly but I was like a kid when it was outside very excited, not even that gutted it won't start 'cos sort that out and it's there.
Was starting to get impatient before Bug jam, really wanted it on the road for then, and time was taken up with silly stuff. The thought crossed my mind to give it to someone to finish it, but I really didn't want that didn't want to quit, so what if it missed bug jam and now maybe action, it will be on the road very soon, and when it is it's because I put it there ;)

light surrounds could do with another coat of colour only noticed it in the sunlight, if it starts to annoy me I'll sort it, didn't really want chrome as it'd be the only chrome on the ext so thought it may look a bit out of place.

We've all been saying how small & low it is, because for the last xx years it's been a foot or so in the air!
