Project: Car PC

Cool project and neatly done.

So if its a pc running programs - when you start the car I guess you switch it on via the TFT, but do you have to wait for it to boot up every time??

You do, yes. There are lots of little tricks you can use to speed up booting tho (have a look at the digital-car forums that were linker earlier if your interested)
A lot of people on there have theirs booting in 20-30 secs

Nope you don't have to switch it on, the M2-ATX psu does this automatically when you turn on the ignition. When you turn off the ignition it waits x mins and then shutsdown/hibernates/standby. If that hangs then theres a HARDOFF feature which shuts down all power signals also after x mins.

You do have to wait for it to boot up but using hibernation, only takes about 20 secs before im ready to choose a song :)
 
Looks a bit ghetto just stuck up there like that imo.. if you're going to have it like that you might as well just get one of those generic flip-out single DIN monitors. Do you need to make it removable? Can you not just remove the TFT from the casing and build a mould for it?

Regarding the whole bootup thing - if you build a nLite XP install you can get "bootup" (from hiberation) times down to a few seconds. My will-be-finished-some-day CarPC boots from cold to XP in about 15 seconds and in less than 10 seconds from hibernation, and can be remotely "woken up" via wireless (i.e. my house) :)

My centre vent has 3 gauges in and I don't really miss them :)

Still got the windscreen vents (which I actually prefer to having them blasting on your face) or the side vents.

I prefer the feet ones, or screen depending on weather. I've never used them before anyway.

Out of interest, how much work was it to get all the wires routed and connected to the right places?

How did you find out what you needed to do? Looking at doing something similar myself.

Well it wasn't to hard as i'd already routed the amp cables before, but, this caused as problem as there was a few tight spots because there are 4 thick wires running down one side of the car!

Um, hard question, some info I found out on mp3car but to be honest, and not to sound like a snob, but I sort of just know what to do, its hard to explain, a lot of things that I think are common sense to me seem to be 'eh, what, how'd you know that' to other people.

Ok maybe that did sound snobby and big headed but hopefully you understand!

Yeah I'm normally not too bad at just sort of figuring stuff out myself but I've never really worked with cars before and I've been searching but haven't really found a step by step... :(

Will keep looking at other projects and see if I can come up with something :)
