Project Cars vs AC

Ah I wish people would spend years making half-baked games. Even though AC has less content, are there a lot of good, free mods like tracks and cars?

I think its now at the point you need to research yourself as this is entirely dependant on your preferences.

However, for longevity I would say in a years time AC will be a much better game. PCars 2 has already been announced and with no more crowd funding extra content, bug fixes etc will slow down for PCars. I don't believe there are any plans for AC2 at the moment so they will keep working with what they have to refine it and there are a lot of quality mods out as well as some not so good ones but the community has taken off and has a strong following. I do not know at all if PCars is mod friendly and its too early to tell.

I have both, each have their own merits, but I tend to struggle to keep multiple racing sims in daily use.

I don't do me vs AI in any sim for long, not my cup of tea, I either hot lap alone or go multiplayer.

Far more official tracks and cars in pCARS, including Le Mans 24, I don't know if AC has a Le Mans mod (again, I've not touched custom content in AC).

In AC, the AI use exactly the same 300Hz physics as you I believe (which can limit how many AI you have racing with you, depending upon your CPU power), in pCARS the AI use much less power than the 600Hz physics engine.

I object strongly to you playing "Mystic Meg" here, just because word got out that Ian Bell wants there to be a sequel, that does not mean pCARS will automatically be ditched in Codemasters fashion with lots of bugs.

We have had reassurance that pCARS support will continue for some time yet, as the sequel is not likely to be released for ~3 years or so.

Cars: http://assettocorsa.club/mods/auto

Tracks: http://assettocorsa.club/mods/tracks/

Some cars are top-top quality and in fact have been bought by the devs to put into the official content - like the Lamborghini Miura or AC Cobra, but most are average to poor quality.

Tracks - some are decent, but no mod track is laserscanned, so it always feels inferior to an official track. I love the Top Gear mod track though :)

For single player, I do love some Project Cars but for authenticity on handling, AC just feels more real for me. Neither are bad and both have major pluses and miniscule minors.

I wasn't doing a Mystic Meg (although appreciate the reference :D). Its just the nature of the business nothing against PCars. However they have gone the console route which means as long as it sells well enough, sequels, and i've not known a console dev support old releases very often.

Regardless of the above, decided OP? :p

If you want to practice for track days - Assetto, if you want a game with decent arcade physics- pCars. But ironically Assetto has a lot more choice in terms of street cars, 75% of pCars are racing contraptions. Laser scanned tracks and racing school grade sim physics (Kunos makes road car sims for Ferrari and also for ASCI racing schools in Italy) are more fun to me, but each to his own.

Project cars BMW 1M on Nords, note the lack of steering input:

Assetto - same car, same track - its a different experience by far, much more alive (and this example has track grip set to default unrealistic "Optimum" setting. For Nords, devs say that track surface should be set to "Old" and track temp to below 15 degrees. On that setting the car is more alive still).

So if you like to go fast and have fun - either would be ok, but pCars may be better. If you like to think about trailbraking, lift-off oversteer, and preventing snap oversteer - AC is the right choice.

I don't really think that's a good indication that one is better than the other. I own both games, both are good but they're entirely different - which one is closer to real life, I wouldn't know and neither would 99% of the keyboard warriors defending/playing them.

Same car, same track - real life :p

Looks more like pCars to me than AC.

I find Project Cars much easier to play, by my logic that means it is closer to driving IRL.

I'm not sure if my logic is accurate, but I always struggle to play driving games which feel unrealistic because I try and drive the car as I would IRL, and it feels wrong. Project Cars feels much better.

Look closer, there is a lot see-saw motion, it is slight as the driver mostly tiptoes around the track, but it is there - left-right-left-right looking for grip. pCrars lacks that.

Some moments on pCars video just cry foul: @1:57 the back wheels of RWD car leave the track and the starts to rotate but then magically straightens out; @5:46 -car leavs track completely and rejoins with barely a flick of countersteer, same @6:34

Project Cars if you want an actual game.

Assetto Corsa if you want a simulation but aren't worried about any actual game.

This is pretty accurate. I have more fun in pcars, but I do really like the handling in AC. I spend much more time playing pcars though if that says anything. I really like driving the old Caterham down the California highway track in the rain.

We are talking about attacking the track and not driving to the shops here ;)

Once you start attacking and really going for it it looks like this and is not easy, requires good footwork, quick countersteering and weight transfer.

(Both the Nordschleife and the Yellow Bird are in AC, and driving looks scarily similar. )

It took me a long time to tune my g27 inside ProjestCars.... out the box it was bit naff, following the forum posts and after editing a few of the settings, on the cars i'v gained about 4 secs a lap. For me its better game but i didn't play AC for too long.

Thinking about picking this up, played a bit of it at mates house and reminded me how I felt playing the first Forza on the first Xbox :)

Does it work well with the xbox 360 controller on PC?

Don't suppose you could post your g27 settings?

I know a few are wheel specific but I haven't really got the time to go into the detail required so if I could borrow yours as I tried my g27 in PCars and it just did not feel right at the default settings. Would like to be able to just tap some pre-set settings in and even if not perfect know it will be decent to judge properley.

Cheers.
