Project Ethos & Cube - Desk Awesomeness

Bit of an update from today.
Did:
1) Make cover for Blu-Ray drives
2) Mount vandal switches
3) Drilled holes for mobo tray
3) Cut outs for cable from PSU at the back
4) Run network cable under the carpet to link the desk to the TV unit

Designing and thinking of the cover:

From the back did a larger hole so that we could use the nut

All 4 holes done.

Cut out the back for where the psu and power cables go through
It needs to get sanded down and also another tool to cut it straight (didn't have it on us :()

Just as a thought but for the drives why haven't you used slot loading drives? I'm sure it would take little effort to mount them and have a wooden button to poke the drives built in one on the back?

Bit late now I know but it would might have been quite nice to keep the aesthetic without "horrid" plastic drives poking out of the desk? Perhaps a BIT hard to do with a router etc so you don't damage the front of the desk but I reckon doable.

As far as the button placement on drives changing etc - have a bit of hardboard mounted behind the button (or even metal to avoid something so thick as they don't eject disks THAT far out of the slot) so it can hit basically any switch in any position.

Only other thought - what's it like for weight?

Otherwise REALLY nice project, not meaning to sound negative at all.

Thanks guys :)
Im really loving this project and taking my time to do things right.

Im stuck at the moment waiting for some more bitspower fittings and what not.

Mercutio thanks for your suggestions :)
Ye a bit late now, but will keep it in mind for future.

Weight of the desk itself isn't too heavy.
But no idea really :)

With hardware and liquid in the desk and draws full, it will be pretty heavy.

One other thing that might be worth considering (probably doing the same to my cheap wooden desk) is a USB 3 hub (one of the big 8 port ones) tuck it away somewhere and find a decent USB 3 header to USB 3 plug so you can mount the header somewhere nice on the front/side/top and plug it into the USB hub.

It's a bit early days for tonnes of them to be around but you can definitely find USB 3 extension leads and can definitely find the USB 3 header components so with a bit of messing you should be able to make an extender hooked into a header plate (even if you have to break out a soldering iron to do it).

I find myself always needing more USB ports even for simple things like pocket drives/pen drives/charging and docking leads so a wee cluster of them somewhere you can get to easy might be nice. I'm sure you could find a mounting plate that matched the aesthetic of the power/reset buttons. Have a couple on the front for smaller things like pen drives or a USB headset, a couple on top somewhere for plugging in pocketable drives and a few tucked away on one side for more permanent bits.
